I may get some flak for this, but I don't care. While I don't think traced bases are AS insulting as recolors, they're not exactly very respectful either. I just don't quite understand why people are persecuted when they trace works of artists here on dA, but it's perfectly fine to trace the works of the Disney artists and then whore them out as digital coloring pages. If you traced a screenshot or used a traced screenshot, it's not your work. Don't pretend like it is.
If you want to make a base for people to use, draw it yourself without tracing anything. Difficult? Yes. But at least it's more honest. Want to use a base? Please try to find one NOT traced from a copyrighted screencap.

These are hand drawn and will ensure your OC's won't be generic Disney character clones. And best yet, they're not stolen from Disney! So kudos to the base makers featured here for taking the honest approach to base making!
Sorry for the mid comic rant, but it's just something that bothers me a lot. The problem with traced bases is that they're easy to make, and they get a lot of traffic (if done well). So, I point the blame at both the creators, and the people who frequently use them (and sometimes even pay for them...what??). There would be no supply for these lazy things without demand for them. So PLEASE try and stop using them and posting them online! Try a NON traced base, or simply try drawing on your own. These traced bases need to stop being made, they're littering dA.

I have a question. I used a Base I found on Google. It was a direct picture from TLK2, I gave credit to Disney and made it clear that I found a screenshot from the movie itself. To draw something In that style.
My question is: Is it still wrong to trace movie screen shots when I give the credit to Disney and not myself? All I did was add my own details after I traced the basic shape/style.

In my opinion, it's still wrong to me. But at least you had the decency to give all credit to Disney, which is more than I can say about a lot of other people who do them. I won't hold it against you by any means, even if I don't entirely agree with it.

I dislike all base that copy "line" of character from some part of the movie.

don't want to give you any flack, because this comic is genius and I get your point about traced bases.
but I do want to say there is a big difference between a company of many like Disney, and an individual artist like on DA
tracing some screenshots won't harm disney , but it can harm an individual artist particularly if credit is not given.
companies and such have a leg to stand on, an individual is much smaller, less protected, less known ect
Though TLK bases are really hard to edit without them still looking like TLK characters, but they can be good coloring practice, I suppose. I only ever use them as reference
some traced bases can be edited much better, and can actually be excellent pixeling practice and personally I just find them fun to use now and then.
but they can be a crutch as well

I understand what you're saying, and of course tracing someone's fan art is very insulting as well (and in a more personal way)! But I still sympathize with all the Disney artists that drew each animation frame by hand, putting their heart and soul into each drawing, and working their ass off day and night, slaving over the film for years on end! Just to have someone come and make a quick trace of it, hand it out to people and get free 'ass-pats' without actually doing the work!
There was a hard working artist behind every single frame in the movie (as with every animated film around that time), the only difference is they got payed to do it.
I don't mind people using bases for private use, my problem is when they post them as 'their work' and yell at people who 'steal' a picture that they traced to begin with! The fact that there are so many linearts and bases that aren't taken straight from Disney, there's really no excuse to use the traced ones in my opinion.

though honestly we don't really know how the artists feel about it.
maybe they don't mind, maybe they do, I wish there was a way to know.
I figure people use the traced ones because they are canon style.
I like to use mlp bases for that reason, I have a hard time emulating the style.
not saying it's an excuse, and I would all to glad remove every edit I have ever made if Hasbro said anything about it.

if it helps you and this comic are actually why I took down every traced base I ever made on my old base account(it had original bases on it too, but I have since shut down the whole account for other reasons)
but I read your comic and decided, while I don't usually mind base edits with real work put in them, I no longer wanted to contribute traces for people to use.

I agree. I hate it when people put their copyright on traced base and they're all like "DO NOT STEAL" or "CREDIT IF YOU USE". Why should the user credit the tracer? The only one they have to credit are Disney artists. And why would traced bases be better than recolors? They're exactly the same....
