Wicked cover details you've got there, I take it you've carved into the wood to 'reveal' the motifs? It's really quite wonderful, so crisp and clear. Did you have to use relatively thin leather? I know I've tried banding with ex upholstery grade leather and it just doesn't give nicely.

Thank you, I don't remember what I with this one, I think I actually built it up from fine sections of board.
Yes, the leather was a thin goat skin, like a soft leather coat would be made from. The other trick I found was to use contact adhesive to attach it as the leather could be pushed into the details and would hold straight-away.

Andrew, thanks for noticing my work,if only because it allowed me to see yours.Great stuff, your folio is re-awakening my desire to forge some gnarly clasps and chain for a leather-bound manuscript. The stolid Alaskan pragmatism prevents me from neat projects like that, you're luckier in your part of the world.I've seen pictures of a shop in Ireland that makes illumined manuscripts, vellum and all, made me wistful for custom like that.Keep up the good work,Jake.

Thanks - there are some great bits of metal working in your gallery. Your right that the type of customer can really limit your field of work - I got tired over the years of 'cheap as possible vanbraces and greaves'. Iβd never about how the area defines it much before, around here itβs mostly Roman or Medieval boarder fortifications but I lived before in Wales which was a lot more βCelticβ for art and crafts.

Forgive me,but i'm hugely entertained by what you wrote-it's so exotic to me!I live in an Athabaskan indian community,350 air-miles from the nearest road, and arts&crafts here are predominantly Wal-Mart,with some very beautiful indigenous arts still around.Bless this internet,it cracks me up!

Joe - This one was fairly simple the paper came in a big roll so I could cut the page sizes to whatever I wanted (about A4 and a half) - I get a lot of my paper from decorating shops (used as a base for painting walls) but it's cheap, large and has a good course texture.
The front and back covers are just to hinged sections of plywood (as it wasn't going to be seen). Time and durability where an issue with job so I bolted it together rather than using a traditional binding. Clamped the cover and pages then drilled out the holes bolting it tight afterwards and ground of the excess of the threads.
Leather work that's visable is just asthetic so was just moulded and glues over the wood work.
Good luck with your trys - sorry that I don't have chance at the moment to write a more detailed process.

Thanks - I see that you've got a lot of interesting things going on with books yourself.
