Description Gandalf (who belongs to J.R.R. Tolkien) and Dumbledore (who belongs to J.K. Rowling) discussing swords.
The one Gandalf is holding is his sword Glamdring in its scabbard. It was forged by Noldorin elves long ago, and borne by one of their kings (hence the silver and blue colours of the House of Fingolfin).
The one the headmaster is holding is Gryffindor's sword, made by goblins long ago.
The misunderstanding revolves around the fact that Tolkien's goblins are not the same beings as Rowling's goblins, whereas Rowling's (house-)elves are a far cry from Tolkien's.

If anyone's the actual Ultimate Imitator & True Rival to Gandalf, it is in fact (believe it or not) Elminster Aumar from the Dungeons & Dragons Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting.

Why? Simple...

Gandalf & Elminster have a lot in common for different reasons and they had that rivalry going since August of 1987, those who played the D&D Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting will eventially realize how much in common it has with The Hobbit/The Lord of The Rings albeit for different reasons, so comparing Gandalf with Albus Dumbledore the moment you read this is a "huge mismatch".

But if Albus Dumbledore is the Ultimate Imitator to someone? Believe it or not it's Obi-Wan Kenobi from Star Wars, because those two have a lot in common for different reasons with the big reason is that they are mentors to there respectful heroes and those "heroes" just happen to name there kids right after there masters.

Why not. I am not familiar with either franchise, so I wouldn't know.

And the more people who know about Gandalf's True Rivalry with Elminster Aumar the better, for let the truth be known about how much Gandalf & Elminster Aumar have in common (trust me noleme, you'll be amazed)...

1: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar lived many different lives (Gandalf was originally a Maia of ManwΓ« the Wind-King, Varda the Star-Queen, Irmo the Dream-Master and Nienna the Weeper named OlΓ³rin while Elminster lived the life of a banguard, a thief, a priestess named Elmara and eventually became a Arch Mage of Shadowdale)
2: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar are both immortal and are over 1,000 some years old (Gandalf's immortality is due to the fact he's a Maiar and was at least 1,000 years old as Gandalf despite being "much more older" while Elminster Aumar's Immortality is due to the fact he's a Chosen of Mystra and is at least 1267)
3: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar are Campaigners (Gandalf is known to convoke The Fellowship of The Ring to destroy The One Ring & lead the Free People in the final campaign of The War of The Ring while Elminster Aumar despite the setbacks caused by The Spellplague continued his camapign among with Storm Silverhand to save FaerΓ»n)
4: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar are both known to give advice (for one example, Gandalf's one piece of advice involves "Do not be quick to deal out a death sentence" while Elminster Aumar's one piece of advice involves "Well... you can always use a scroll of resurrection")
5: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar are both known for smoking pipes as part of a habit....... pretty often (no joke, they would be able to smoke as often as they wish without suffering the ill effects of long-term smoking due to there godly Constitution ratings)
6: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar are both known for horsemanship (Gandalf is known to ride Shadowfax, The Lord of All Horses while Elminster Aumar is known for poor horsemanship)
7: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar are Masters of The White Flame (Gandalf being the Master of The Flame of Anor while Elminster being the Master of a granted power called The Silver Fire which once unleashed releases a beam of magical whitish flame)
8: Gandalf & Elminster Aumar are legitimate iconic Fantasy Sword-Wielding Wizards based off of Merlin albeit for different reasons (without a single doubt for different reasons with Elminster Aumar coming right after Gandalf himself thus pointing out that Elminster Aumar is Gandalf's Ultimate Imitator)

This is indeed the legitimate research about how much Gandalf & Elminster Aumar have in common for different reasons, which also points out that if anyone knows so much about Gandalf himself but knows not about Elminster Aumar need to take a very good look at him as seen in this link: forgottenrealms.wikia.com/wiki…

And what I show you by the form of research is also proof that the idea of Gandalf vs Albus Dumbledore is indeed a "huge mismatch" to begin with as well as to end with. As for how much Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi have in common, I'll mention that as seen below...

1: Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi both come from Novels that had actual movie versions shortly after the release of the Novels themselves (Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope came to being as a Novel in November 12, 1976 and was
released as a movie on May 25, 1977 while Harry Potter was first released as a Novel on June 26, 1997 in the United Kingdom and was released as a movie on November 4, 2001 as a London Premiere)
2: Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi have achieved mastery albeit for different reasons (Albus Dumbledore achieved mastery in magic in addition to mastery of the Deadly Hallows while Obi-Wan Kenobi achieved mastery of the force in
addition to mastery of Soresu)
3: Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi are War Veterans (Albus Dumbledore fought in The Wizarding Wars while Obi-Wan Kenobi fought in The Clone Wars).
4: Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi both arranged their soon-to-be-pupils to live with different families (after the deaths of James Potter & Lily Potter respectfully, Albus Dumbledore arranged Harry Potter to be rescued from Godric's Hallow and left him under the care of the Dursley Family while after the death of Padme Amidala, Obi-Wan Kenobi left Luke Skywalker under the care of the Lars Family who eventually got killed by Imperial Stormtroopers)
5: Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi planned their own deaths to allow their respectful pupils to live and eventually defeat there respectful enemies (Albus Dumbledore planned his own death by Severus Snape to protect Harry Potter so he'll defeat Lord Voldemort while Obi-Wan Kenobi planned his own death by Darth Vader in order to give Luke Skywalker & the Falcon's crew to escape).
6: Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi have even meet up with there respectful pupils after there respectful deaths (Albus Dumbledore meets up with Harry Potter in Limbo after being struck by Lord Voldemort's Avada Kedavra in an attempt to destroy his Horcrus while Obi-Wan Kenobi appeared to Luke Skywalker in the form of a Force Ghost at one point to another after "becoming one with the force")
7: Albus Dumbledore & Obi-Wan Kenobi are legitimate Mentors (Albus Dumbledore formed a mentor-pupil bond with Severus Snape and eventually with Harry Potter while Obi-Wan Kenobi formed a mentor-pupil bond with Anakan Skywalker and eventually Luke Skywalker several years after)

I know this is a long post of information and I'm not certain about your personal thoughts but if you have any then I've be very interested to hear your words.

That's true, but nowhere near the fame and craft of the Elven, Dwarven and Dunadan swords, apparently. It seems that the Potterverse goblins are roughly the equivalent of the Tolkienverse Noldor.

This is great! I can imagine the confusion this could cause between the two greatest wizards in literature (in my opinion)!

As for the duel, I don't know who would win but it would be great to watch (from a safe distance).

I have heard rumours that there will indeed be a split in the hobbit story over the 2 movies, but also they are going to bridge the storyline between the hobbit and the lord of the rings. I think they will be showing Aragorn and the Dunedain (sp?) patrolling the borders of the shire while looking out for the Nazgul and things like that.

Whatever happens, I can't wait for the hobbit movies and am so glad peter jackson is directing again after the great work he did on lord of the rings!

Thanks, I'm glad you liked the comic!

I don't know about the team cramming Rangers into the Hobbit - I don't think they gave any signs that Viggo Mortensen may return. My guess is that the 'bridge' will be the hobbits, and of course introducing the White Council storyline. The adult Rangers are just too unrelated to the Hobbit storyline, although I wouldn't mind seeing a 10-year old Estel sneaking a peek at the Dwarves in Rivendell.

Well, responding to an earlier comment Gandalf has been shown to use magic e.g. the charm he did to hold a door in Moria which was eventually was broken by the Balrog, him burning the wargs under the trees in the Hobbit , breaking Saruman's control over Theoden in Edoras and later repeating that feat in Isengard , his defense against the three hunters at Fangorn , his stafless disarming of Denethor ,the battle against the Nazgul at Weathertop which was said to be seen by a distance of a three day journey, him helping the army retreating from Osgiliath and a quote from FOTR about him knowing more than ten slots of spells in each language without needing to search his memory.I don't know much about D as I have not read or seen HP.
