Description First off, I am disappointed with my scanner cause this looks really grainy compared to the real thing. I may have to rescan this later becaues the real picture looks so much better than this bad scan.

Anyways, this is again Baron Gabriel, my brother's character, only I think I did a better job this time around. I really started getting into the idea of a medieval knight character right about the time the movie Kingdom of Heaven came out because it really showed me that there is no such thing as a true hero in most movies these days... You know what I'm talking about, the kind of hero that is determined and never wavers and isn't a priest-slaying heretical moron (I.E. Orlando Bloom's character in Kingdom) But honestly, I really want to create a knight-based set of characters who are firm in their beliefs and know how to live according to the Truth and that is why I've really been enjoying drawing Gabriel lately.

This drawing probably marks the most advanced my line-art skills have gotten to this point and I'm fairly proud with the real drawing...but as I said earlier, the scan leaves a bit to be desired. Hopefully you like it.

Special thanks go to for the sweet chainmail tutorial... It worked out marvelously: [link]

That depends! Mostly on these three things: What you want, what your time frame is and what your budget is!

I'd be willing to talk to you about it a bit, though!

Thanks!

It would be similar to Hero of Honor and Faith, I care less about time beings I am still writing the book, and budget is where i fall short. I'll send you the overview of him so you can get a feel.

Very intense. His position is intriguing, and makes you start a story line all your own. Everything is wonderfully detailed, and the mail, armor, and even- armed cross gives it age. Which is never a bad thing. Well done.

Oops, I've just realized I hadn't commented this one

I love knights, especially when they wear realistic armor (or even better : fighting clothes that really existed) I liked Kingdom of Heaven.

Here I must say he's very classy, it's really the kind of drawing I like, the pose, theme, character features. The movement of his hair and the way he's holding his sword are truly beautiful

Well thank you much! I'm glad you like it, it's one of my favorite pictures too.

I liked Kingdom of Heaven's STYLE but I hated the movie's message... It's kind of sad that Christians MUST be portrayed as hopeless idiots in every movie...

Hey this pic is awesome i love the armor detail, and how much it all flows, but i think it might even appear better with a dark background, and symbolically it could be like the light shinning out of darkness sort of thing, i donno to much about art but this is really good and i cant wait to c what else u do.

Ninebreaker,
Okay, I've been going goo-goo-gah-gah over this picture for over a month now, and I think it's time that I actually comment on it.

Now, I'm not a devout Christian like you, so don't hold me as a hypocrite by saying this... OMFG! There - I hold you to your word. When I first saw your first version of Baron Gabriel, I didn't know much about his history, other than he was from either Germany or France [have you decided between the two yet?] during the Crusades. However, your new notes here clear it up. I haven't seen Kingdom of Heaven, but from the reviews I read, I also get the impression that Orlando Bloom's character isn't exactly ideal. While I don't agree with some aspects of the Crusade, I believe that the knights who fought were virtuous, and really believed the cause they fought for, and if they massacred civilians, they were following orders. But, if they truly followed their beliefs, then in the end, even those who did so were virtuous.

It's good to see a dedicated hero for once... in the old days, that was just about the only kind of hero you could find. However, when the 60's and 70's hit, people wanted their heroes dirty and gritty, and you got people like The Punisher. Nowadays, you rarely find someone who's virtuous and all that, and you're making a go for it. Baron Gabriel would once have been a common-place hero, but now, you're defying the norm - congrats... ANARCHY!

Honestly, you're my favorite artist on DeviantART, and I love your pencilling and shading. What size paper do you use for your pictures? I'd find it hard to fathom if you used 8 and a half by 11, because even with a .3, it would be incredably difficult to get that much detail in. Even as grainy as the picture is, it still looks marvelous. The sword and the right-hand are just jaw-dropping with how much detail you put into them.

Although... one quick error I found... it's not that major, since the sheath wasn't drawn, and I didn't notice it until tonight... In this picture, he's right handed, but in the other picture, the sword is sheathed on the right side. Also, the clasp to the sword hanging from the belt is also on his right side. If he's right handed, it should be on the other side, allowing him to draw the sword with better efficiency. Then again, he might be left-handed, and switched the sword over to his right hand for an unknown reason, but I'm gathering that he's right-handed. A little technicality I just thought I'd mention. It's like the mystery of the changing directions of Leaves of Lorien... it happens.

I first got acquainted to your art through an image search on Yahoo!, looking for a Fire God, and I saw your old Fire and Wrath of God picture, and it's curious to see that one of your older pictures from the site is more popular [in page views, favorites, and comments] than your recent pictures. Your recent art is just as extraordinary, and I look forward to your future pictures with earnest.

Best/Dan

PS: You recently commented on my picture, Scott Wittiere, and commented that you might want to draw him sometime. If possible, can I get permission from you to draw Baron Gabriel? I'll consider it an art-trade or whatever, even though from my side, I'd be cheaping you out... but, any chance to draw Baron Gabriel is too good to pass up!

ninebreaker In reply to Daitou [2005-09-13 03:27:45 +0000 UTC]

First off, I am honored that you consider me your favorite DA artist. It means a lot more than you know. Secondly, I apologize for not responding sooner. I haven't been spending too much time on DA recently... school has made me so busy.

But anyways, as far as this picture is concerned, yeah I noticed that in the first picture he's left handed where as in this one he's right handed. That's why I decided to leave out the scabard at the last second lol. To be honest, there is one other error with this picture that I figured out too late to change... You get a prize if you can find it.

Also, you're right. I didn't draw this on 8 1/2 x 11. In fact I do very little work on regular printer paper. This happened to be on a 5 x 8 piece of paper in one of my sketch books. It's a bit smaller, but it was still a pain in the butt to draw all with a .3 pencil, which I assure you is the case ^_<.

But I've since decided to make Gabriel Norman, which is basically French...kind of. His father was part of the Norman invasion of England and that is how he gained his nobility...or something like that. I haven't really figured out the whole story yet.

Anyhow, I ran a Yahoo search and indeed you are right. That's pretty sweet. I wonder how many ppl run searches for "Fire God" daily on Yahoo. That'd be interesting to know how many ppl stumble across my work every day.

As for new pictures, there are a few that I am working on. The comic is also a big concern of mine but I am sure I'll be able to squeeze some things in here and there soon. I hope we get the chance to talk soon and I hope to start on Scott shortly as well!

I really like the way you are "lining" things nowadays....nice nice nice shading and tones.
