Justice League: Kohai

After the White Martian Invasion which prompted the two teams of heroes calling themselves the Justice League to unite, they decided that the initial team (Alpha) would be the public face and deal with the heavy global threats while the secondary team (Nextwave) would handle more street level and covert missions. They also decided that the young heroes that they met during the crisis that helped them out needed to be trained to be future members of the League. This new team of Justice League Trainees was called Kohai, to express the team's status of always having a League member present either during their training individually or as a team (In Japanese culture, kōhai is roughly equivalent to protégé or junior. The senior, or senpai is roughly equivalent to the Western concept of a mentor). Based in the Hall of Justice, donated to the team by the United Nations, the next generation of justice is in a League of their own!

Atom: Issun-Boshi Mijin (design based on Rockman EXE aka Megaman NT)

Uses nano-morphic suit to reduce size to work on nanotech projects and traverse the global net & interact with web denizens.

Issun-Boshi Mijin discovers that the culprit who sabotaged his nanotech experiment and infected the worldwide web was in league with the white Martians as well. Another nanotech operator, calling himself Dwarfstar, is behind all of the issues he's had since he started traversing the web. he obtains a clue to thwarting the invasion and leaves just as Dwarfstar makes mention of his mentor, Reizo Hirate. He briefly returns to the web after meeting the Justice League an telling them his plan to neutralize the White Martians. Once there he realizes that the heroes don't have access to their natural abilities and are vulnerable. With Blue Beetle's help, they craft temporary nano suits for the team long enough for them to make it to the exit web portal. After The White Martian Invasion, the League offers an invitation to Issun-boshi that he rejects. He decides to head back into the net on his own to confront Dwarfstar. He loses to him when they fight one on one, and is taken captive. While being held prisoner, he comes across his mentor, Reizo. He informs him that he and his colleague, Aramoro Genshi discovered the secret about another professor, Shoichi Royama sexually assaulting students. With information he was given by White Martian sleeper agents, Royama sabotaged Issun's experiment hoping to kill them, but they all were swept into the net. He was fortunate enough to awaken first and convinced the denizens that he was their creator. They then were ordered to take the sleeper and the two scientists prisoner. Reizo says he needs to locate Aramoro before he can leave. In the process of helping his student escape, they are attacked and Reizo sacrifices his nanotech suit to re-activate Issun's and he barely makes it out alive. Realizing he's gonna need more help and combat training, he decides to take the league up on their offer. When he returns, he will take people he recruited to help him rescue his mentors and take down Dwarfstar. His team is: Damage (Garesu Emori) , and a female friend named Molly who will go by the name Molecule in her nanotech suit. He will also enlist the aid of former enemy, Atom Smasher.

-The Atom's Justice League Mentor is The Flash. With their scientific backgrounds, I thought Rei would be the easiest one to be able to relate to Issun.
-Dwarfstar will form his own team of nanotech operators called the MicroSquad.
- Reizo (Ray Palmer) and Aramoro (Al Pratt) will have nano morphic suits that are based on versions of Mega Man as well.

The Ray: Kintaro Sakata (based on Japanese folktale Kintaro the golden boy, and HoroHoro from Shaman King)

Mystic axe grants enhanced strength, flight, attraction & repulsion abilities & mystical creature summoning.

The son of Raijin had many adventures battling rouge demons in the forest in the shadow of Mt. Kintoki in Hitoshirenu after receiving the mystical axe his father had sent him. One of which led him to cross paths with the Shadow of The Bat of Goth-Ahm prefecture. Realizing the boy's potential and frequent loss of control, he convinced Kintaro to join a group of other young heroes in training at the Hall of Justice. Kintaro enlists his teammate Plastic Man to help locate and rescue one of his Raiju friends as they are essentially neighbors, both living within the borders of Hitoshirenu. His evil uncle wishes to strip his power from him and claim it for himself. Kintaro is naive, and Plas' being quite the opposite helps him from succumbing to his uncle's machinations. He will finally be introduced to some of his immortal kin when assisting Captain Marvel of the Global Captains of Industry and Wonder Woman to prevent an assault on the August Assemblage. He will learn that after dispatching many Oni, that he shares some of his heritage with them. Although he is half human, his father Raijin is the son of the Immortal Raiden and a Hannya-oni.

-Kintaro's Justice League mentor is Wonder Woman. Their shared connection to the Japanese immortals made her the best suited for him.
- Kintaro is the only one that can understand his Raiju animal summons.
-Kintaro may be strong and extremely powerful, but as a result, his combat skills are very rudimentary. Amongst hand to hand training, Wonder Woman teaches him how to wield The Ray to its maximum capabilities, as she has a lot of experience with mystical weapons.
-The public often mistakes Kintaro's references to The Ray as him talking about himself in the third person, and at times attribute the name to him.
- Kintaro can't control the force and speed at which he flies when using The Ray, he's more comfortable enlisting the aid of his Raiju.

Plastic Man: Unagi (design based on Simon from Gurren Lagaan)

Infused with Bakemono Hedoro infused shapeshifting ectoplasm and liquid plastic, allowing him complete control over his physical structure.

After the White Martian Invasion where the Justice Leagues Assembled, Unagi is astounded by the wonders of the outside world and asks Batman if he can spend more time there before heading back to Goth-Ahm. Batman tells him that the other leaguers had just discussed making arrangements to house the Wonder Twins and Atom while also training them to eventually join the League. Batman seeing his interest, officially extends the offer to him as well. He accepts, only after "Bats" promises to keep an eye on the Lost Kids he was protecting while he's away. After settling in, they meet the person tasked with teaching them how best to use their powers as a group and individually for the betterment of mankind... Guardian. They all fail to see how a normal human can teach any of them anything, until Guardian wipes the floor with the lot of them! After "boot camp", they are allowed to return to their homes and meet up weekly for training and occasionally missions with their Justice League Senpai. Unagi gets such a thrill out of the missions that when at home, he still longs for more action. While walking through the marketplace of the prefecture, a dark haired beautiful woman with a white streak and wearing a red kimono, sees him in action protecting some kids from merchants that they stole food from. After resolving the issue, she invites him into the tea shop that she is in. She sits behind a beaded curtain and has her secretary act as an intermediary. Plastic Man tells her that he'll only takes on jobs that help those who cannot help themselves, and usually enlists the aid of Sake Shōjō, a homeless alcoholic narcoleptic just to have someone to crack jokes with. She refuses to share her name, so he just refers to her as Chief. He keeps the missions from "The Chief" off the radar from the league and the Bat, as the Kohai charter explicitly states that they need a league chaperone to operate as such.

- a shojo (or shōjō) is a sea spirit with a fondness for alcohol. It can be harnessed to carry out an individual's desires by use of a spell box. The shojo can only be seen when a person is drunk. Shōjo actually means 'young girl', although an ancient version of the word does mean monkeys and monkey-ish monsters. I decided to use this name for my version of Woozy Winks. He is also a master of drunken boxing, but has absolutely no fighting skills sober.
- Plastic Man's Justice League mentor is Batman. He's been keeping an eye on him from the beginning and already has a personal connection with him.
- Bats is more concerned with keeping Unagi from becoming a villain than becoming a hero.
- The chief is a character from the Plastic Man cartoon. I also merged the characters of Woozy Winks and Hula Hula.

Zan: Marvin Shirohane (alias on Earth); (design based on Ail from Sailor Moon)

Can convert his body to water in all of its various phases of matter.

While working with Guardian and the other trainees, Zan and Gleek get into a fight over one of Gleek's constant pranks on him. Zan storms off when his sister doesn't make contact with him, denying him access to his powers...essentially siding against him, in his mind. She then loses her temper with Gleek when he says that they're better off without him. She reminds him of all that she and Zan have sacrificed for him, especially with all he's taken from them and demands that he fix things. he catches up with Zan in a forest just as an Inter-Galactic Police Force patrol arrives on earth. They say they are there to rescue the Wonder Twins, and to carry out the mission they couldn't...killing Gleek. Gleek's powers are neutralized with an inhibitor collar. Zan takes on his former cohorts without the use of his powers and stops them from killing the fugitive. The officers can't comprehend why he is protecting the murderer of their mentor, Ovon Kelt. Jayna and the rest of the trainees arrive alongside Guardian and finally operate as a unit for the first time, and successfully repel their attempt to take the Fugitive. Now branded as accomplices, and their location known, they all focus on their training for their impending return. Gleek and Zan now share a newfound respect, but now Jayna and Gleek's relationship is strained as one of the officers from the failed retrieval was one she was engaged to be married to.

- Zan's Justice League Mentor is Aquaman....for obvious reasons.
- Zan, although a good officer, had issues with impulse control and thinking with his heart and not his head. Jayna on the other hand was a stickler for the rules and constantly applied logic to everything she did. They complimented each other greatly in the field.
- Zan and Gleek continue their prank based relationship (although much less malevolent) similar to Rex and Bobo on Generator Rex.

Gleek: Wonderdog (alias on Earth); (design based on Infernape from Pokemon)

Super strength, agility, energy manipulation, limited flight

Exxor, the homeworld of Superman's old enemy, Grax, whom he faced in battle on Warworld was struck with a planetary plague that took the lives of billions. There was a widescale evacuation from the planet of people and wildlife. Illik, a citizen who was laughed at by his fellow Exxorians had experienced a vision months prior to the outbreak and started to build an "ark" to house the wildlife of Exxor and protect them from the ravages of the coming plague, was later accused of causing the plague after it hit. A bloodthirsty mob came to claim his life, and he locked himself in the edifice along with the animals he sought to save, launching it into orbit of the planet. One of these animals was an elasti-ape he named Gleek. while some of the Exxorian refugees left the planet in search of a new home to relocate to, others stayed in geo- synchronous orbit to work on a way to rid the planet of the plague and return their home to its habitable state. Unfortunately, some of the fleeing pods were intercepted by the Agents of Apokalips. Grax was on such a ship and was ferried along to Mongul's Warworld to become a galactic gladiator. Grax suffered the loss of many friends and family while on Warworld, as well as his humanity. Becoming hard, and unforgiving, he became consumed with survival. all that mattered to him was besting whoever came before him, by all means necessary. The ark that was built by Illik was also collected by the Agents of Apokalips before an Intergalactic Police Force stockade could be placed around Exxor to protect its remaining citizens. Illik's ark was transported to the scientific enclave housed on Warworld to conduct experiments on the animals to create weapons for Darkseid. Gleek was subjected to many painful test, augmentations, and enhancements. after having developed new abilities and higher intelligence as a result of the experimentation, Gleek was released on the populace of Warworld. Gleek eventually crossed paths with Grax and the two reveled in the pain they caused to others, so when Grax started to collect a small band of followers, Gleek became his second in command. When Grax faced and subsequently lost to Superman in battle, he was rendered comatose. With Grax down, Gleek took his chance to escape Warworld by stealing an unmarked cruiser that was allowed to land on the planet near the labs. Unbeknownst to him, Gleek's stolen ship possessed a powerful piece of technology known as the Flesh-Driver, an alien construct capable of rapidly converting raw matter which channeled energy from living beings into technorganic attack robots. The infected beings then consume matter, reproduce and then spread further. This was the plague that had afflicted Exxor and planets in twelve other star systems. Ovon Kelt's personal ship blocked Gleek's escape and a broadcast came across the comms. It was Kelt charging him with the crime of spreading the plague which afflicted Exxor and a host of other planets, and telling him to surrender. Without warning the ship Gleek was on fired at the IGPF cruiser and it exploded. The recording was transmitted over the monitors all over Warworld and relayed to IGPF headquarters. Zan and Jayna listened in horror as the entire crew and their mentor was snuffed out, making Gleek one of the most wanted criminals in the galaxy. The Twins were distraught, but Zan, being the more emotional of the two snuck off to capture the fiend. Jayna followed, more to keep her brother from enacting vengeance over justice. Without permission, they tracked the ship down and engaged it. After a brief fire fight, both ships crashed on a small backwater planet known as Earth.

- Gleek's Justice League mentor is Superman. Gleek has a chip on his shoulder about the Kryptonian as he was the only one to beat the only person to beat him. While they engage as sparring partners, Superman also takes the time to teach Gleek the softer side of martial arts with meditation techniques and anger management.
- Gleek, who has a prehensile tail, can act as a conduit for the twins to activate their powers should they be out of reach.
- When he awoke after his departure, Grax became obsessed with revenge on The Man of Steel and made his way to Earth for a rematch.
- Illik, The Laugh Maker was Gleek's master and ringmaster of a space circus in the Super Friends show.

Jayna: Wendy Shirohane (alias on Earth); (design based on Ann from Sailor Moon)

Can shapeshift into any animal that she has laid eyes on. Mainly relies on the alien wildlife she is more familiar with.

After the IGPF report of the Wonder Twins obstruction of the arrest of the fugitive Gleek, the planet gets visited by a group of Exxorians. Four other sets of twins with similar abilities to their own. It is revealed that along with Zan and Jayna, they are The Ten Elements of Exxor: Zilax and Jod, Zilm and Jila, Zanga and Janx who can convert themselves into various forms of Fire, Rock, Vapor, Plant, Metal, Crystal, Shadow, and Sound. It is revealed that when their deity split itself in order to experience companionship, it didn't stop at two as Zan and Jayna were led to believe. The Elements also explain that like the several other pairs of twins, they were descended from a line of peaceful rulers—essentially their planet's royalty. Each set of twins ruled a continent and only dealt with their subjects. After years of peaceful rule and remaining extremely isolationist, a plague came to Exxor. The toddlers Zan and Jayna escaped, as their custodians stole one of ships, and fled the planet. They were raised with the other Exxorian refugees but it was agreed that their bloodline would be hidden for their protection. They were saved from being boarded by pirates by the Intergalactic Police Force. Their savior was Master Sergeant Ovon Kelt, a longtime member of the IGPF. He and his unit escorted the refugees to a safe location, and he stayed in contact with them after their relocation. The Twins, Zan and Jayna looked up to him and as soon as they were old enough, joined the IGPF. The Elements told them that the repair of the ecosystem of their planet was impossible, and they were returning them to Exxor to stand trial. Their sentence, being left with Gleek on the planet he infected, by choice or by force. They tried to flee in their cruiser, but were quickly taken down. Among them, Jayna's betrothed, Zilax (whose sister is Jod) who had joined the IGPF after their disappearance to try to save Jayna or avenge her. The trio fought the Elements and the battle was in favor of the Twins and Gleek, who after their training with the League had become a much more efficient fighting unit than their kin. Then the unimaginable happened, Ovon Kelt exited the cruiser the Exxorians came in. Gleek broke formation and flew at Kelt in a murderous rage, prompting Jayna to protect her "resurrected" commanding officer by inflicting pain on Gleek and herself through their shared link. Zan, however, began to question everything. Although he was happy to see him, he wondered why Gleek was still wanted if his crime was murdering a man who clearly wasn't dead! He also questioned the death warrant on the 12 systems that he’d allegedly plagued, when during their time in the forrest being hunted by the IGPF retrieval unit, Gleek inadvertently revealed evidence that made it impossible for him to be the culprit. After putting the clues together, Zan realized that their mentor was responsible for the plague by utilizing the weapon that crashed with them on Earth. Kelt was there to reclaim it and had no problem torturing his sister to force Gleek to reveal it. Kelt used a "Slave-Driver" device to keep Zan from mentally accessing his motor skills, freezing his body while his machines tortured Jayna and Gleek. He kept him out of range of Jayna so that his powers were inaccessible and began to pummel the boy. Gleek used the last of his strength to break his bonds and reach out to Jayna, while stretching his tail to wrap around Zan's arm. Kelt looked at the small ape-like creature and the realization of what was occurring struck him just as Gleek said, "Wonder Twin powers...activate!" before passing out. Restored, and free from Kelt's control, the Twins began to battle their duplicitous mentor, just as one of the female Elements walked in. Kelt blasted her through the chest, then called the others saying Gleek had done it. The battle with the Elements recommenced, and Kelt made his escape during the frenzy. The tide of battle turned as Zan and Jayna managed to rally another to their cause. The male named Zilm acquiesced, not wanting to see any more Exxorians killed like his sister, Jila. Zanga and Janx followed and all the twin pairs fell into accord after they stopped fighting long enough to explain the truth. Kelt had located the Flesh-Driver and was about to activate it, like he had on all the other worlds when the Elements caught up with him. He engaged his Slave-Driver to immobilize all of them. He then told them that he had acquired the Flesh-Driver in service to Lord Darkseid of Apokalips. The other planets were all test runs (Exxor included), but Gleek ruined his intended delivery of the weapon to Darkseid when he stole the vehicle. He set up Gleek to take the fall so that he could clear himself of the crimes and then claim the weapon afterward. Just as he was about to release the driver , Gleek punched his fist through his chest from his back. Gleek looked at the Exxorians and asked, "You're not gonna try to arrest me for that this time, are ya...?!"

- Jayna's Justice League Mentor is Green Lantern. They both are intergalactic enforcement officers, but Jayna shares with Hari the intricacies of intergalactic law , and Hari shows her how think outside the box and not to be so "by the book", but still be efficient and effective.
- Jayna is highly analytical and calculative. When she takes the forms of various wildlife, it allows her to be free and in touch with her more primal nature that eludes her in her normal life. It is where she is in much more in touch with her "heart" element.
- In addition to their powers of transformation, the twins share an empathic link, or "twintuition", enabling one to alert the other over a distance when in dire circumstances.
- A rarely seen aspect of their powers is the ability to break mind control. while the twins were under the influence of mind control, Gleek can cause them to make contact, the activation of their powers freeing them instantly.
- I merged the concepts of the flesh driver, introduced in the page of Extreme Justice, with the Dark Heart from the episode of Justice League Unlimited of the same name.
- Issun-boshi helped the Wonder Twins deactivate the Flesh Driver after their crash landing. After the event, he gave them a device to contact him if they needed his expertise. This is how he was able to locate the Justice League after seeing them together during the White Martian invasion.
- The Nexwave Leaguers also participate in the training of Kohai.

LOVE Plastic Man's design. What's on the end of his necklace?
And the Atom's costume, though perhaps a little TOO close to the original, still looks really cool.
Kind of preferred the version of Zan who could turn into multiple elements, but oh well.
Where'd you get the idea of giving Gleek powers, incidentally?

Nightshade475 In reply to nightcrawlerfan19 [2015-11-08 04:13:36 +0000 UTC]

The necklace is the remnants of the Bakemono Hedoro. I agree with the assessment on Atom, but don't know if or when I'll get around to an update. The Ten Elements of Exxor is an actual storyline from Extreme Justice. Followed those guidelines. I was determined not to make Gleek a wuss, so when I decided to make him a wanted criminal, I had to give him abilities to back it up.

some elements will be. there's another character who i want to throw in the mix as well, but that was where i was going. In the comics Molecule was male and didnt have much of a backstory, but with the lack of females in the Atom "family", i figured it'd be the perfect opportunity to bring one in.

I chose Simon for Plas because a wanted him to be younger and more in a position to be mentored by Batman. Also having shared the background of living on the streets gives them a way to relate. The goggles cinched it. The reason why I DIDN'T use Luffy (and subsequently choose to attribute those particular character traits to my version of Elongated Man) is because although Luffy can stretch his limbs, he can't reshape his entire physical structure.

I wanted Gleek to be a total badass to counteract the total uselessness we were used to seeing! I spent a lot of time trying to make him a more complex character, and when I decided on the concept of mentors Superman made the most sense. Gleek also has a grudge against Krypto from Warworld.
