I finally made him! He's been rattling around my head for ages.Just the fact that I did ANY personal work that kept me up till 3 is a big deal. It's been a while!
It's...bittersweet for a variety of reasons. Let's just say I have a lot more time on my hands, and icky-goo is therapeutic.
I've been wrestling with finding my villain for a long time, which is what's been blocking me from doing any Jbots work. But a things fell into place, and I think, at least for the time being, I've got him where I want him.
It's strange how these things happen- a car ride, a few sit-down and sketch sessions, the right song, mood, and the time. The other bots are based on friends of mine. This one's...kind of a self-portrait.
I have a lot of iterations and variations in mind- hopefully it's obvious that his suit is pretty malleable, so he'll be changing shape quite a bit. Well...you'll see.
He's a bit of a trickster. His masks change color and shape, subdividing and flitting around his suit like a school of electric fish. He speaks through them, picking a proxy to fit his preferred tone and emotion. A face for every occasion.

Do you have any intentions to pursue this idea more? This is the sort of idea people have right before they go to bed and get made in the morning because they didn't write it down. It's a genius idea and the aesthetics of the concept are unlike most anything I see in the mainstream market. You're already a 'career' illustrator and I'm just an illustration student, but I know brilliance when I see it.

Thank you SO much. It's actually been developed as a graphic novel series pitch, that is floating around the offices of a few publishers at the moment. It's definitely something I want to pursue further!

THIS. IS. MAGNIFICENT.
I could not have hoped for a better, cooler, eerier, ominous enemy to your jellies. What I like about him best, I think, is his posture. It tells of a calm, collected person, with inner monologue. Yet there is a rage twisting mass around him, betraying his true inner workings. Love it!

haHA! well, that's incredibly encouraging. This is essentially a comic world I'm developing...I hope eventually, though, that it will be animated in some form or fashion, because really Jellybots doesn't quite work without motion.
In general, it's just a world/story I'm working on in my spare time

Woah what an incredible character! You've come up with a very intriguing and intimidating villain here. I can't to see his development, I think you've portrayed his trickster nature wonderfully--and I love how you've given his ability to 'take a face for every occassion' such an interesting and unique twist; it is both bone-chilling and fantastically cool! Can't wait to see where you take us with him!

Do all stories even need villains? Or I might misinterpret what you're saying, maybe you had in mind the whole time to do a story with protagonists and antagonists. Personally I fail to see why it would discourage oneself because you don't have a clear villain. But that's how I work I suppose.

ah- well, no. not all stories need villains at all. And I'm a big fan of the ones that don't! But this one does, and I knew it...and I couldn't quite figure it out.
I knew he was the next thing I wanted to work on, but it took me a while to come to a conclusion I was happy with.

Whoah... This thing looks really intimidating - like a threatening stormcloud, almost.
I like the idea of him being many-faced - it reminds me a bit of the Happy Mask Salesman from the Legend of Zelda-series - at first, he seems a pretty harmless guy who is content to sell you funny masks, but then you notice how jerky his animations are; almost as if he's flitting from emotion to emotion without passing through the states in between.

Thanks! Yeah- the kind of schizophrenic shifting is something I really want to do with him...and I think each mask would have an associated voice and attitude to go with it. Glad you like him...and I'm really glad he reads as intimidating
