Description Sat by a lake yesterday afternoon waiting for some Grebes to come closer, (which never happened - thanks mums with screaming kids and noisy pushchairs!). However this southern hawker dragonfly was zipping around me so made for some good practice.

That is an amazing capture of a notoriously difficult subject to catch in flight.

I can't help but wonder, though, how many shots you took to get this one...and if you captured him like this on your first and only shot, please lie to me; I already feel inadequate just seeing the color and clarity of this image.

I didn't take all that many shots to be honest. I'm not a trigger happy photographer. I shoot in burst of 3-5 depending on what I'm capturing. Dragonflies are some what predictable as they tend to follow the same route when hawking.

It was shot with my 200-400 f4 VR + 1.4x TC and is virtually uncropped. I got a few other shots head on etc that are pin sharp but due to the wide open aperture I was using they're not the greatest shots you'd want for dragonflies, low dof etc.

Glad you like it though

Omg love! I was going around the golf course a few days ago, and I saw a beautiful dragonfly. Unfortunatly I only had my phone camara and he was zipping around so fast I couldn't get a decent shot. Oh well...

Sorry for not replying! There are no lakes nearby where I live but I have a canal so maybe I'll be in luck!

Good luck on getting your work out there although I'm pretty sure you won't need it!
