Description

Nymble was excited for this week's lesson in WIND!
With only one element left to learn in Basic, (And the class seemed to be PACKED with fun as it was left to Zagor teaching it) Nymble rushed off towards the park where he'd seen Lumibugs before.
The warm sun setting on his back, Nymble's large, bat-like ears twitched as he listened carefully.
Wind seemed to be one of those "boring" elements, and this ability was no exception. But finding Lumibugs to catch would be worth it!

He closed his eyes and listened.
leaves rustling. Birds chirping. A river stream nearby.
Hmmm. No good, these were all things he could normally hear. (His hearing was pretty good naturally!)
Concentrate Nymble! You got this! Hrmmm..
And something very distant caught his ear. A flicker? Or a flitter? Were they wings?
Upon opening his eyes, he saw a single Lumibug right in front of him. Its little beady eyes curious and alert.
That flutter sound wasn't distant, it was right in front of him! But sound a faint noise appeared farther away. Nymble decided this fact may be important when deciphering sounds in the distance!

"Hey little guy!" Nymble announced.
At first, he was excited to catch the Lumibug and show the rest of his class!
Djehuti would be excited to see it for sure. And Reef! Cameo wouldn't have much to say about it, (Or anything to say) but maybe she'd like to see it! Maybe even McNair-- he liked Lumibugs! And... oh.
Nymble's excited spark went out when he realized someone he also wanted to show wasn't in class this month.
No big deal but... Something about the thought made Nymble sad. Something about this class just wasn't the same.

He sat by himself as the sun set, the green shelled Lumibug glowing a yellow hue as the sky got darker.
Until his back was no longer warm from the sun, and the Lumibug had long gone.
Nymble had lost track of time, absorbed in his own thoughts that never seemed to make it past his mouth.
"Oh well, I'll catch another Lumibug tomorrow." He sighed, snapping his fingers into a orange flame and trudging back to the Nook in the darkness.

-----------

So I really had fun experimenting with this painting. I am continuing my process of trying to draw quicker and sloppier in order to learn faster.
If you have any critiques or suggestions I'd highly appreciate them!

Inspired by this beautiful style!

I just loved the colors and shadows.
I learned a lot from this experiment!

I really like how you did the colors and position of nymble, but maybe you could line up the background and nymble a little bit better, because the background looks amazing and so does nymble, If it was a little bit more lined up I think it would be 10 / 10, it kinda looked like you used a crayon to color and line :3

I really love you're art and I love seeing how creative and how colorful, you can be! I hope that my critique can be of some help ( if you need it ) In your future art projects

I admire the shading and use of natural colors, but there is room for for improvement in areas such the proportions of the lower body. the background could use a little more detail so that the main character in the picture doesn't look overdone. One thing that somewhat sets this picture off is the unnatural white lining around the leaves in the bottom corner and around the firefly. The lighting is extremely well done. and I enjoy seeing how well the background colors go together but still contrast from one another. This piece of art is well done and I hope to see more like it in the future.

Thank you for your input!

However it's important not to make the background more detailed than your character.
Your character is the main focal point and the background being simple helps draw the eye to what you want.

The white lining is actually a style preference for making the characters pop out more.

Critiquing is much appreciated! But it does take skill and experience, so I would avoid using these if you don't have a good concept on composition in art in general. πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

I LOOOOOVE the colouring!
but what i noticed straight away is that it kinda looks like his torso is made up of, like, plates or something. the border between his neck fluff and lower body and that with where his... was it? or smth bends. (idk anatomy esp not words orz). dunno why the sudden dark shading. dunno abt the neck fluff maybe it's fine but for bending/sitting n shit it's worth looking up how our fats and skin bunch up when we bend and contort. i'm not sure what's going on with the legs in general there.
on the other hand the slouch is spot-on and the whole thing totally conveys that bummed whatever feeling. you hit the bullseye with the mood. totally the right time of the day for the pic.

Hmmmm, made up of plates? Like the shape of his body is off maybe?

The dark shading is made by the bushes in front of him. :3 (At least that's what I was going for, haha. Not the greatest at calculating lighting sometimes)
Hmmm not really sure how to make those things you listed more accurate unfortunately. I did looks at some refs of people sitting in this pose but they weren't exact.

as in blocks/segments idk man
nah the dark shading is fine i mean like it's like a solid line. it's hard to get this shit across OTL"

yah i dont have the bunching skin and fats thing down. like, human stuff doesn't even apply fully but
i hear you're meant to always be drawin curved lines with humans or smth. so anyway maybe i'll try n sketch out what i mean if u want. maybe that would help?? im not even confident but maybe i'd understand why i even have a problem w/ anything lol

Hahaha yeah man if you have the time to play around with it and maybe sketch over it to help that would be amazing!
Critiquing is hard without visuals sometimes I think.
