Description With every new day, there is hope...

I thought I had submitted this, but apparently not. It's not a recent piece, but it's still very dear to me.

I was deeply moved by this wonderful piece of art. It is more than enchanting, or magical--and it is both of those...there is a sense of true hope shining from this piece. I have NO idea how you were able to accomplish that. You are a truy talented artist.

Wow, beautiful job, the background, her wings, the sky! The clouds are stunning, you painted them amazingly! The clours are very soft, a wonderful choice for the picture. Breath-taking job,

The color contrasts in this piece are exquisite. The warmer tones are strikingly beautiful against the cooler ones, making it eye-catching yet almost relaxing at the same time.

Overall, this is a very beautiful piece.

More of those wonderful colours that we see in the Rebirth pic... I do love that combination you have come up with. I should imagine it'd take a bit of bravery to use those hues succesfully - I really do love those colours together
To me, her eyes looks slightly too big, but it isn't so much of an issue, seeing as the picture seems very symbolic, and the style brings to mind a mixture of the old medieval paintings and Pre-Raphealite (I do so love Pre-Raphealite ). Beautiful work on the wings, and, as usual, the hair

nellmckellar In reply to Ludi-Price [2004-01-30 00:28:12 +0000 UTC]

Thanks again, Ludi!
I do enjoy working in that colour combination- it seems to be a striking contrast of warm and cold- warm sunshine and cold, cold shade.
I do usually make eyes larger than normal- I thought it would heighten her look of worry. Lately, I have been drawing slightly more realistic faces, however...
I'm so happy you think it has a Pre-Raphealite feel to it! Ahh, there's something so magical about the Pre-Raphealites.

snuurg [2004-01-26 22:04:39 +0000 UTC]

- this and your last piece, 'Rebirth' - well, brilliant - they look as if they could be part of a related series, maybe, like a panel-section for an elaborate open-out book of Kells or somesuch - really liked the Rebirth one too, if I'd spotted it first on epilogue I definitely would've given you the vote (if it was a votable thing, that is - ) - or if indeed I could even get into epilogue half the time...ahh, let's not get into that....

- anyway, another beautiful work!

nellmckellar In reply to snuurg [2004-01-27 11:44:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, Snuurg!
I agree with you. After I submitted " Rebirth," I was reminded of "Hope," because of it's subject matter and colour scheme, and I wondered if it was in this gallery. I hadn't submitted it, so I thought I should, as I think it's relevant to "Rebirth," and my current state of mind. I am very flattered that you think they would suit being in an elaborate book of sorts! I do want my works to have a whimsical, mythical feel...

Oh yeah, it's not a vote-able competition on epi. The mods choose the winner.

Whoa! Slow down, Lady. You don't give me a chance to recover from the last piece that you submit!

Once again, it's incredibly detailed, with somewhat unnatural colours that seem to group together very naturally though. I think the technique and style is visibly a bit older, as you say, but the idea itself and the sheer beauty of it is every bit a match for the rest of your work. I love the look on her face, and the way that it bows into her hand. That, in my opinion, is indeed the look of hope. It's still melancholic, but in a beautiful positive manner. My favourite part is her wings. I love the variety of colours that you've used, and the details on it. The colours remind me of patterning on some eggs at around easter time. Your wet-in-wet technique is always brilliant, and I can tell that you've been learned in the ways for quite a while now!

It's no surprise that this piece is very dear to you. It's beautiful!

Oh Peet, you seem to know me so well. Noticing that the style/technique of this piece is a little older. There's no fooling you! You've got eyes like an eagle!
Thank you for the lovely words!

HeatherD [2004-01-26 21:26:10 +0000 UTC]

The colors are fantastic!! I love pastels. They sky is absolutely beautiful, and her hair really stands out since it's a color that contrasts with the other colors in the piece. And you really got that fuzzy look that mountains in the distance get, awesome! I think she looks more apprehensive than hopeful... lol. I saw some special once on how people perceive things differently, like for example they showed different people the same facial expressions and everybody had different ideas of what emotions those faces were expressing! Guess it's true

nellmckellar In reply to HeatherD [2004-01-27 11:39:29 +0000 UTC]

Thank you, Heather.
The idea behind this was the angel is pensive, and deep in thought. However, the sky, and the general lighting suggests the dawning of a new day- that it's not the end of the world, and there is still hope.
So you were right.

all hail nell, queen of folds! this is, as usual, superb. very dreamlike and peaceful. her eyes... she looks deep in thought. i hope this doesn't ruin the beauty of this, but it occured to me that it would be funny to have her staring at the coffee monster. that would be an interesting twist, i think.

She ain't naked but that's alright! The way you draw folds on the clothes look beautiful, and they really look like they were etched into the paper. And its amazing how the yellows actually seem to glow on here! To me it looks like waves of fire or energy radiating from her-which I think is very cool! There's just too much good stuff in your work! The clouds are soft and soothing, the mountain feel craggy, and the angel actually feel like she's not flat or part of the background like what happens when everybody else uses watercolor. I think we can all learn something here, and that's...
NELL DID A PICTURE JUST FOR ME SUCKAS! MWAHAHAHA!!!
