Description I can't believe this one is finished. I have this really relaxed feeling, when you're accomplished something and you're to lazy to start something else. I probably will spend a few hours staring at no place at all and then start all over again with something new XD

is the b est inspiration ever. When she's over here I manage to do things I'm usually to scared even trying. I'm not sure if she's doing anything special (she's not poisoning my coffee, I know that XD) I think it's her mere presence which is dripping of inspiration ^____^

So.. something about the picture:
Anima Species: Banded Palm Civet (They're so awesome *_*) I used references from a book...
Background: lil waterfalls taken from a calendar
Tools: Water colours and coloured pencils
Time Taken: Not sure... I spent weeks on it, but I was doing other stuff as well.
I'm happy of: The fur
I don't like: The water (as always)
State: Not for sale... I might be selling a few limited prints if anyone's interested

Character and art © by me

Male or female? What do you think? ^^

Edit: OMG... DD Ö___Ö That's like christmas. Thank you all so much for all the nice comments and favs. *happy* *__*
And special thanks to and for this very special Christmas present <3

It's beautiful! Strikes me as a young male, perhaps out on his own, just minding his own business.

I love his fur! It's so detailed, and I'm so jealous. xD

Its so pretty and very cute! I love the fur and colors and the water is really well. You've actually kept a green shade in it most people dont do that.

I tried to do my best with the water ^^, I guess I should have used more green and grey... I will try that next time because it makes it look much more realistic.

You know, for some reason I cannot place, it struck me as female. Don't ask me why, but it's abnormal, for me - usually when a weapon is involved, I assume a male until evidence indicates otherwise.

You know, if you want to improve your water shading, you might try starting with a color closer to the surrounding landscape. The actual texture of it doesn't look bad at all, but the color difference between it and the surrounding land makes it look opaque. I can't give any more specific advice than that - I'm not an artist - but I'm fairly certain of that much.

nelena In reply to FakeKraid [2009-12-26 17:26:21 +0000 UTC]

It is indeed supposed to be female. I think giving a girl a weapon is my way of showing feminism XD

Oh.. and thank you for the tipp for doing water ^_^ I tried using the colors of the surrounding, but I guess I was to scared of ruining something so I used them veeery carefully ^^, I will try to be more daring next time ^___^

FakeKraid In reply to nelena [2009-12-26 21:59:11 +0000 UTC]

The worst you can do is ruin a few days' worth of work, right?

So, if I don't know, do you know what it is that makes it look feminine? The only thing I can think of is the defensive posture; men, when they assume a defensive position, instinctively ready themselves to strike. This animal has its back to us and its soft underbelly curled up. It isn't shying away, but the position is passively defensive, not aggressively defensive. That's the only clue I can think of.

The water isn't that bad, don't worry.

Welcome to my Favs. I thought about your question about male or female. From the rather complex pearl wristlet I'd say its a female, but the face would let me think of a male. A not very masculine one though.

Good work!

This is an impressive use of color pencils. There is a lot of love in this pic. I love they eye, it captures a very natural shape and glint. That hair must have taken hours - it would have for me, at any rate. And that background... *grr* I wish I had found this picture last week, it would have made a wonderful reference for one of mine. Very impressive, no doubt. I also love the way you such natural exotic forms. In a word: NICE!!!

Just amazing, simply amazing. Not just that I like virreds (civets are awesome and will always be), but the details on this are fantastic, even if it was just from a book (and I know that it's hard to find virred references anywere). The details in the fur and the beads are fantastic.

*blushes* Thank you so much for your lovely comment *.* Feels all happy. It really IS hard to get good references, especially for not that well known animals (searching a fox is too easy XD )You often find pictures of dead animals when using google >_<
I only used the book for references and made up the pose and face ankle and everything myself ^_^ I really started loving this pretty creatures *.* Haven't heard of them before. I hope to be able to draw more of them some day ^^

You're welcome

I actually try using Wiki, but even then it's too hard for picture references. Civets and genets (all from the family of Virreds, I might've spelled that incorrectly though) are really cool animals that don't get enough attention.

I friend gave me the idea to start searching DA for reference photos. I'm not sure how much civet photos there are... but it might be worth a try... ^^ And at least there we hopefully won't find any roadkills ^^

Redmagesalyre In reply to nelena [2009-02-09 02:50:52 +0000 UTC]

I've tried looking for reference photos on DA, but it's hard finding them for certain animals, like the ones I'm going to use for a project, like Aye-Aye and Sumatran Striped Rabbit. However, the reference photos, the ones that are on here are good.

(Copy 'n pasted from FA 'cuz I'm teh lazy ;D)

I had this picture in my watch list for such a long time now and it doesn't cease to amaze and delight me whenever I see it.

You know what a fan I am of more "realistically" rendered anthros and photo-realistic art as well as tone-in-tone pieces and you managed so well to add all these aspects into an awesome and beautiful piece of art. Being there during the process of its making was astonishing, to see it come to life little by little every day made my get all warm and fuzzy inside, knowing it comes all from you.

This is _your_ work, honey. Don't forget that. I might have given advice or a helpful line, but _you_ led the pencil through all of this. This is your skill and talent showing here and it exceeds that of so many others I know! Look at it and do so with pride!

I love about this piece that I want to reach out to the screen and want to stroke her fur and feel its texture, that I can imagine the sound the little skull and bones make when she moves, how her hair might feel. I can feel her watchful gaze, can imagine how her ears rotate, perceiving the splashing water around her. I can feel the cool water dropping onto me here and there as it flows by. This picture is alive! It moves things in my mind and my imagination and to achieve something like this is what makes out good art in my eyes.

I love this... I love it so much!

Instant fav. No questions asked.

I absolutely love everything about this piece. The detail poured into it makes it incredibly special. Every time I look over it again, I notice new little details. I simply adore how you draw rocks, and the variety of plant life growing on them gives so much natural beauty and life to the scenery. The placement of these rocks and plants throughout the stream keeps attracting my eye around the piece over and over, trying to soak up all the detail.

The banded palm civet is definitely the star of the piece. It's wonderful to see artwork of a species that isn't very popular. The realism of the fur texture and fur markings, together with the anatomy, makes the civet gorgeous to look at. I especially adore the structure of the face, and the little details such as the purple beads and spear. I'd hate to be the first big, tasty fish to swim by there!

Truly amazing work. I love this to bits!
