The story behind this is too long. In short, he was tasked to steal something and failed, again (yeah he made a terrible thief). Then he got accused for a murder that he didn't commit. Besides, he was already wanted for other crimes, so was sentenced to death unconditionally. He didn't want to die hence tried to escape
Luckily or not, he was involved into some political games without even knowing it, and that saved him eventually.
