Description

At long last, another painting for the Porpoise Conservation Society, this time featuring the Burmeister’s porpoise. They are a very poorly known species, that suffers from bycatch and targeted hunting; their meat is often used as crab bait. Despite these continued takes, we have very little idea of their population size and trend. Scientist fear they may quietly be going extinct, gone before we know it. To prevent them following the fate of the closely related vaquita, scientists are hoping to start a research programme in South America that should shed some light on how they are doing.

For a long time, only dead specimens were available to western scientists. Like most cetaceans, Burmeister’s strongly discolour after death, leading to the belief they were plain black. More recent observations of live and freshly dead animals has revealed a steely grey porpoise with fine and intricate markings. Portrayed are a mother and calf in all their pretty glory, practising the hunt of Chilean silversides - one of their main prey. Practise for the future, because one day the calf will have to fend for himself and do his own hunting.

The title was a very late addition to this piece. But in a way it is fitting. Together, these two are investing in the future: the future of the calf and thus their entire species. And by supporting research and conservation measure for species like the Burmeister’s porpoise, we too are investing in a future, one where ecosystems are still healthy and biodiversity is maintained.

I've never actually heard of these guys. It's good you can bring attention to the lesser known troubled species with your beautiful art

Thank you! I feel honoured to have introduced a new species to you, haha. But it's indeed great how art has the power to educate. It's what I love about working for the Porpoise Conservation Society; by definition most of their subjects are poorly known to the general public.

This is so beautiful; when I first saw it I thought it was some sort of 3D model made into a painting. It's really nice that you do this art with a much deeper meaning to it, and I hope others become more aware of the topic too.

Ah thank you so much I'm very happy I get to paint such meaningful illustrations too. Especially for the vaquita it was a strange job, because soon there might not be any real animals left to look at.. Let's hope the Burmeister's don't follow that fate.

Looks great!
Love that deep underwater feeling I'm getting from this. The textures in it are very realistic.
If I didn't know you were an illustrator I'd swear your work was a photograph. It's very realistic! Great work!

Gorgeous!

Can you recommend some good refs for these guys' proper colouration and markings?

Thank you! A very nice ref is the unparalleled underwater videos: www.youtube.com/watch?v=CTmog9… and www.youtube.com/watch?v=64XNIJ… They are the only full body views of living animals that we have. Other than that I can highly recommend scientific studies and any field guide/marine mammal encyclopaedia entry on the species, as they often have very nice photographs of (albeit dead) specimens, as well as written descriptions.

Thanks! I already have a couple of identification guide books, but they don't include the markings on their head, which makes me wonder if they're more like artists' impressions based on dead animals. I've been working on the designs for some porpoise plushies, and I've been trying to get them as accurate as possible. Only seeing your painting showed me the references in my books are somewhat less accurate than I thought, and finding good photos has proved a challenge...

namu-the-orca In reply to KtrenalWinterheart [2018-07-27 14:03:04 +0000 UTC]

Ah, could be that the illustrations from your reference books are a bit outdated. As the text states, not too long ago their appearance was only known from long-dead individuals and those turn completely black. Even when descriptions of fresh animals came in, not all illustrators would have been able to observe the porpoises firsthand, making mistakes understandable.

I could pm you some photos if you'd like?

Yeah, even my newest reference book was still published in 2010, and I haven't had chance to purchase a more up-to-date one.

I would very much appreciate a PM with some photos. Thank you!

Thank you! I really hope so too. With these guys hopefully we an interfere at an early stage. Although.. vaquita's troubles have been known for a very long time as well and I am afraid they are truly doomed. Fingers crossed things go differently with the Burms.
