Description
When: October 20, 2018
Where: Wildlands Emmen, The Netherlands
I feel kind of bad that, for our obsession with Turacos, we've never actually really tried to photograph either the Violet or Lady Ross.
They have such different looks to them, and it's the green ones that actually struck our fancy first. But this guy was really asking to be photographed, and I think we'd go remiss if we didn't share a photo of one of these pretty ones too
Species: Violet Turaco or Violaceous Plantain-Eater (Violette toerako)
Latin name: Musophaga Violacea
Originates from West Africa.
Current status: Least Concern
Did you know:
…They are unmistakable birds, often shy and inconscipious in their treetop habitat.
…Their plumage is a glossy violet, hence the name, except for the yellow forehead, chestnut-red crown, white ear coverts and the orange-red bill. When it flies, the inside of the wings is red, just like in most Turacos.
…Though locally common and not considered endangered, they do suffer from the illegal pet trade.
