I am very, very grateful for this prompt, that has allowed me to draw a love-at-first-sight animal I met last year in November... Hubby and I went to Aquatis (Lausanne, Switzerland), an awesome freshwater-only aquarium... It was so interesting, learning about freshwater ecosystems around the world and seeing animals you normally never see in aquariums or vivariums... Anyway, we were in the South-America rooms when I started squeeing (quietly) like a 10-year-old: "OMG!!! an Inktober ray!! It's soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo cute!!" After watching them for a loooooooooooooooooooooooong time, I told Hubby: I really do hope next Inktober will have a prompt like "underwater", "ray", "fish" or "freshwater"... it's a dream-to-be-drawn!
And I've kept this in a corner of my mind, thinking that, if the prompt didn't come, I would draw it anyway, just for myself... and then I got the list and smiled ear-to-ear when I read the 1st prompt
So, my dear watchers and/or wildlife fans, this is the Xingu River Ray (Potamotrygon Leopoldi), that lives in Brazil and about which nothing much is known (I mean, look at its wikipedia page ) ... the IUCN database says their population is unknown, and that the last time it was observed in the wild was in 2013... so I feel very, very lucky I could see some of them for real
For reference, I used the "mom" of Aquatis, who's called "Léopolde", from this video: www.youtube.com/watch?v=unYCgu… the video was made in the "nursery", that's why the environment looks tiny and bare, but they have a way bigger habitat in the exhibit area...
I've drawn all the spots as exactly as possible, it took me ages, but it was worth it!! Isn't it just the most Inktober-ish animal ever?? and for me, one of the most beautiful fish I have ever seen...
