Description Name: Kata
Age: 28
Fact: Eyes wide shut

Model: DivaMiranda

The working title for this series, The Madonna and the Whore, came from the widely used definition of the Madonna-Whore Complex, which is used when referring to men who view women as two distinct and separate personas, that of saint and sinner, or of mother and whore. The myth is that these men want Traci Lords in the bedroom and Delia Smith in the kitchen. Western psychology talks of how when men (who cheat) cannot combine sex and love in one relationship, they may split their love according to the Madonna-Whore Complex. As Freud wrote, 'Where they love they cannot desire; where they desire they cannot love.'

However, this series doesn't concentrate on men and their complexes, hence I have now settled on a new name. I wanted to show that these roles are not something imposed on us but something within us. Hence if you smile while doing the washing it might mean you're thinking of something that makes you happy - are happy. Not conforming to some role given to you nor trying to fight against it. You're just being you. Every woman has these roles (and many more) within themselves and there's nothing wrong in exploring them. I also wanted the pictures to look staged, so it detaches you from the woman in question and makes you think it could be anyone.

Lastly, I was interested in recording a certain moment in time for the women, that period of their lives frozen in two frames.

This project is still ongoing.

It made perfect sense. And on some level I agree with you. A lot of it probably has to do with the fact the she's the only semi-professional model out of the women I've photographed for this. While she's obviously better at posing and thus it was a joy to shoot her, I also like the 'realness' of some of the other models.

I really like this series, because the women here look... Normal. Mostly, you find model sort of people here that are all thin and 'hot'. I'm happy to see mediocre people for a change.

I really like this image... it truly says a lot. And your description adds a whole new level to it.

At first I didn't like the fact that you could see the tattoos on her in the image on the left, but I feel it really adds to the concept that you brought up: that regardless of what she's doing, she's still her on the inside. Through the outer layer that she's made to don because of her daily activities.

However, I think the shirt she's wearing isn't... common enough. The fact that it's somewhat see-through really throws me off. And in the second image, how she's looking off into the distance is spot-on... letting her hair down and dreaming.

Btw, which one of these images is flipped? Is the red tattoo on her right or left arm?

I'm happy you took the time to look so carefully. I didn't like the top you mentioned at first, but it was the most 'bland' item of clothing she owned and when I saw how... plain she *felt* in it, I decided it was good... it's a sort of reflection of her personal level of 'normalcy'.

The dusting image is flipped.

i love this series. i think 'duality' applies not just to the subjects you portray, but the series as a whole even - i'd taken for granted that it's yeah, on the madonna-whore complex because that what it seems immediately, on the surface. (guess i shouldn't have just skimmed through the write-up SORRY! ) so your alternative view on the natural multiple roles within women came as a really nice surprise. i love that idea by the way. sometimes the psychology people (to me at least) make too much of a fuss over things, applying theories and stuff to what we can actually just accept as natural. just natural, period.
i think the detachment from the models' individuality, the 'objectification' (how cindy sherman ) works really well too. and oh yes i love the glamour and the colours too by the way! so...i'll be looking forward to seeing the rest of the series.

Miranda is so gorgeous, it's hard to not see her as sexy in both situations! I like that your color pallete is similar in both, even just subtly.

Maybe this wasn't intentional, but I notice that one of the images has been mirrored, and in the right image, her image is mirrored again. It just sets up this very meaningly situation of looking closer as ones self, or something.

Just like me to read too much into it! Beautiful images, I find myself really getting into this series. Maybe I'll shoot one for you.

I really love how you the first picture hints at the second... The tattoos that are partially covered, the shoes that are in both, and that pose. Really loving this. The first picture definately leaves more of an impression, because there is mystery to it.. Nothing left to the imagination in #2.

Yeah I think there needs to be a hint (well stronger than a hint) of a connection as they are about the same woman.
