Fact: Single mother
The working title for this series, The Madonna and the Whore, came from the widely used definition of the Madonna-Whore Complex, which is used when referring to men who view women as two distinct and separate personas, that of saint and sinner, or of mother and whore. The myth is that these men want Traci Lords in the bedroom and Delia Smith in the kitchen. Western psychology talks of how when men (who cheat) cannot combine sex and love in one relationship, they may split their love according to the Madonna-Whore Complex. As Freud wrote, 'Where they love they cannot desire; where they desire they cannot love.'
However, this series doesn't concentrate on men and their complexes, hence I have now settled on a new name. I wanted to show that these roles are not something imposed on us but something within us. Hence if you smile while doing the washing it might mean you're thinking of something that makes you happy - are happy. Not conforming to some role given to you nor trying to fight against it. You're just being you. Every woman has these roles (and many more) within themselves and there's nothing wrong in exploring them. I also wanted the pictures to look staged, so it detaches you from the woman in question and makes you think it could be anyone.
Lastly, I was interested in recording a certain moment in time for the women, that period of their lives frozen in two frames. This project is still ongoing.

this one's great.. overall a great series, but some of them are definitely better than the others.. this is one of them - both portraits are stunning and they show each feeling very precisely, which makes the contrast between the two shots even bigger, which again makes it all work so well.. did i mention i like it?

you're probably right.. uhm.. just as an extra comment: i love the 1st, the 5th and this one.. they seem more true to me somehow and the two pictures cling better together than some of the others do.. okay, i should drop a comment on each, but then i'd get too criticizing..

This is the first I saw in your series. I think it's an awesome idea.
The colors she wears in the kitchen really stand out and contrast with the setting.
Just for some constructive criticism, though I really like it, she gets a bit lost on the light couch because of the lighting. It would be better if she had a higher contrast, such as a red couch

With the housewife one, I think it would be better if she had at least short sleeves. It's just not as housewifey with the spaghetti-strap thing.

I really like this series of work! it kinda puts me in mind of dita von teese, how one hour she's sitting in the front row of the marc jacobs show in couture and then the next she's sitting in a martini glass in a thong (although she's lovely in either). I think you summed it up how everyone has many sides from what we see and what their husbands/boyfriends see and how different they can be.

Nice! Definitely an angel in the kitchen and a devil in the bedroom type theme going there. My only question is why, if the pan is hot enough to have to use over mitts, is the model holding it so close to her body? It almost looks like she's about the burn her right arm/breast....

Hmm don't know, she was just trying out different poses. She does have an apron on though. And the buns did just come out of the oven so it's not 'faked' in that sense.

I just heard the song "Yeah" by Usher the other night again, and it made me think of this series "we want a lady on the streets but a freak in the bed". . . so, a funny coincidence to see a new submission from this.

i have to personally thank you for exploring this subject. it's so much more than a subject though, so i'm using the wrong word. it's simply life to many of us who work, raise children, run a house, go to school (the etc's never end) and still find time to remember the sensual side of existance.

I LOVE your Duality series so much, and I'm so glad to see more work on it. This one is really interesting, not just because of the Madonna and the Whore complex, but because of how opposite she is in the pictures. She is so sunny and bright and warm on the right side, but so sombre, sultry, and cool on the left.
You really worked with color on this one, and how she acts against the background she's in. Beautiful work!

Making this one was really a point in case of how artificial these roles are. She felt a lot less like 'herself' in the housewife getup, but she found it really really difficult to be serious looking in the other one. So both of the pictures represent these particles of her that don't really exist without each other and that's why the contrast seems so harsh as well.
