Description This is a drawing of the famous "Robby The Robot". Robby made his first appearance in the 1956 Sci-Fi Classic "Forbidden Planet". Robby went on to star in many other movies, always credited under his own name. He will always be remembered most for Fobidden Planet. If you younger DA members haven't seen this one, I suggest renting it. You'll ove it. Many of the ideas in this movie were later used in Sci-Fi projects like Star Trek. It's a great movie and I will always have a soft spot for this Robot.

P.S.
If you think he looks a lot like the Robot from "Lost in Space", it's because that robot was designed by the same guy. so I guess Robby has a brother huh? *lol*

The drawing is 18x24 on smooth bristol paper. It took me about 30hrs.

Excellent drawing, my friend. I've just recently seen "Forbidden Planet" and enjoyed it quite a lot. It's really interesting if you analyze the film from a psychoanalytic lens, especially the scene with Altaira and the Tiger. There are a lot of elements of Jungian and Freudian psychology thrown in.
But seriously, I'm quite impressed with the drawing. It was an instant favorite!

Wow, you really captured Robby so well! I like the pose you gave him, and the shading is really well done! It must have taken a long time to shade so much right? 18x24 paper... that's very big. Did you frame the picture and hang it on the wall? I've done a few pictures that size before, and most of them are currently on my wall

I'm going to start a drawing myself of Robby the Robot, but I'm going to portray him as he was in the episode "Uncle Simon" from the Twilight Zone

Hello mmutangg,
Mrs. Altaira Adams has kept me busy for the last 5 years.
I now have time to respond to my fans.
Your depiction of me is well done.
You can buy a full size recreation of me from this Earthly internet.
Fred-the-Robot is the mad scientist and premire re-creator. My original creator, Dr. Edwrd Morbius,
was a wonderful friend.
Mistress Altaira is calling. I must, no doubt, make another dress.
I wish you well. Robby

I'm actually building you little brother B9 right now. No...not a model. A full scale copy. Fred Barton is where I'll get his dome. Make me some extra star sapphires!

Designed by the same man. You might want to watch Forbidden Planet. One of the best sci-fi movies ever.

Other than the torso, arms and the bubble, the rest is pretty easy. There are sources for the stuff that people find hard to fabricate though. You can buy everything that you can't make yourself. I'm handy though and so far I think I can make everything but the bubble and arms.

I have that movie. I love Star Trek the original series too lol. Was he the same Robot that was in the Twilight Zone episode about computerizing industrial factories or was it just a Robot that looked like him? It was just like right at the end of the episode when the main antagonist is replaced by a robot.

Robby made many movie and TV appearances after Forbidden Planet. Oddly, he always had his own name listed in the credits. Robby also stared on an episode of Columbo. Well his upper half did anyway. Google him, he's an interesting search topic.

Great piece! The detail is incredible.

My dad turned me on to "Forbidden Planet" and it's still one of my favorite films. It set the foundation for all Sci-Fi films to come after it, and this piece compliments that fact very well.

Great drawing. I used to have a full size replica of Robby at my business. It was only on loan from the creator, and he has since been removed for renovation. I do however, have the MOLDS for Robby, as well as molds for the Lost In Space Robot, that the same fellow made! Sometime in my copious free time I will start laying up the molds.

Put me down for a set when you get them laid up!
Now I just have to hunt down some sax valves and a dome for the head!
Robby and B5(Mr Robot) are my two favorite robots of all time!
Ever see any of Robby's other movies? Go to IMDB.com and look him up!

MJBivouac In reply to mmustangg [2007-05-14 05:41:35 +0000 UTC]

Tim,
Oh Yeah! If it had a robot in it I've seen it! BTW, we have a vacuform mold for Robby's dome too. The B9 however, has to have a custom formed "bubble" as he is slightly oversized since the guy who created him had only photos from which to work, so he got the scale slightly off.

Go watch his older brother Robby in "Forbidden Planet"!
Forbidden Planet was made in 1955 but it inspired sci-fi
writers for decades after! BTW...Robby and B5 (from LIS)
were designed by the same guy.
