Nice looking model, but it looks like you have a few n-gons in the low-poly version. Very good though.

Hey, just wanted to ask if I could use this model as a reference for a cyborg canvas piece I want to start sketching up and working on. I plan on using the contours for the base, but will add plenty of my own characteristics to it to distinguish it as my own design. My piece will be more of a 2-D profile with the eyesight aimed upward. Please get back to me as soon as possible, thanks. Great work.

Sure, if you need larger renders (not exactly like this one), let me know. I can mail them to you.

As far as I know the original posted image will suffice for size. Thank you very much for allowing me to use this as a reference! I will definitely link to your original once I complete a solid piece. Probably wont get started until the middle of this week or the weekend. Thanks again.

Is it max?

Yes, one without meshsmooth, one with iterations set to 1 and last one to 2.

Not too much, about 20 000 for unsmoothed model and 70 000 with meshsmooth

hypermanx In reply to mmarti [2007-07-18 21:12:23 +0000 UTC]

wow! 0.o....to me that's quite a bit. I've only been using 3ds Max 8 for a few months now. I guess it'll just take lots of time just to work with the program.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to hypermanx [2007-07-18 22:15:36 +0000 UTC]

Not really. To get the basics you wont need loads of time.
Besides, to make good models you don't need to know the whole program (modeling, scripting, materials, rendering, animation etc.).

Awesome job none the less.
I'm still pretty new to maya and modeling people is giving me a hella harder time than modeling enviroments.

I'm workin' on somethin' now.
Mind if I show it to you later?

How long does something like that take to model?

And you obviously are a fast learning going from simple lathed glasses to this. haha

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to letmefragyou [2006-09-22 14:28:18 +0000 UTC]

I don't remember exactly, but I think it took 2,5 months to do... just the mesh, I mean... without textures.

Hehe, not fast... it took a year or so...

WOW!
Nice mesh there!
What would you recommend I use to render my meshes for such great lighting?
I have 3DSMAX but wud prefer to use something else for the render. Wat wud b best?
I love the angle you rendered it at. Mustve been a toughy to model

mmarti In reply to zephroelectro [2006-07-02 18:47:10 +0000 UTC]

Thank you

I dunno, what's the best way to render in wireframe mode, but here's how I do it:

First I render in shaded mode (simple scene setup using GI etc.), then I render the same scene, but with V-Ray's "edge" texture (it's pretty much the same as "wire" in 3dsmax's scanline) applied to the model. After that, I load those to renders into the Photoshop, into single picture, different layers, shaded mode layer below wireframe render. Then I change wireframe layer's "blending mode" to multiply, then invert it and that's about it...

Impressive I have been modeling with maya for a few months now heh heh or trying to I should say. Do you start with a nurbs surface or just use polys? Also a question for you, I have always read that I should avoid 5 sided or higher polys. In many cases I find a dificult time in doing that and my models may as well be done on an etch-a-sketch compared to this. So my question is what do you do to avoid this and or what is the method you use to fix it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to OverlordManny [2006-04-06 06:20:16 +0000 UTC]

Nope, I didn't use nurbs, just polys.
Well, as for 5-sided polys - you can always cut the poly to divide it, but it depends on the model ofcourse, because it can make things uglier. Personally I'm not too concerned about 5-sided polys, because I do high-poly modeling (always smoothing models). But if you do lowpoly, it can create problems though.

great job...did you draw model first?or did you modelling with background views? and do you work with any company?i am a student at animation school, would you like to look my gallery, especially some 3dwork?i will be honored if you give any comment...or suggestion?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

mmarti In reply to nacila [2005-12-12 14:47:40 +0000 UTC]

Nope, actually I didn't draw the terminator model. Most of the time I used screenshots/pics from the movie. Yes, I did put 1-2 times some of pics as background to get the proportions right, but most of the time I didn't use any background pics.
No, I don't work for any company involving 3D or any other kind of CG... For me 3D gfx is just a hobby. Although I do jobs once in a while, but not too often though.

As for your work - you seem to know how to model well already, all is nicely detailed. I think you should try to texture them as well.. Something like you did with your work "ANCIENT", where you painted dirt onto the rendered picture...
