Very beautiful and talented Hong Kong movie actress now retired. One of the top actresses in Hong Kong in the 1980s. For some reason I'm more attracted to drawing asian actresses from this era over the asian actresses today.I've always wanted to draw Cherie. The first movie I saw her in was called Peking Opera Blues. When I started to watch Sammo Hung movies I noticed her there too. I've seen more of her movies recently which was good preparation for this drawing. It was difficult finding decent ref pics to draw from. This ref pic wasn't good quality, small and not very clear but I liked it so decided to give it a try. I struggled alot with her facial expression which I found very hard. I kept working on it and it wasn't looking how I wanted. I started adding color and that didn't help. Gradually it slowly started to look better but it took alot of tweaking! Again I decided to stick with color pencils with the entire drawing. I'll start with pens next year I think. Photo taken using digi cam which doesn't look so great. It doesn't look as sharp and certain parts haven't come across as well such as her skin tones and the blackness in her dress. I'll retake another pic soon.
Hopefully I can complete one more drawing this year.
Framed in A4 size paper. Slightly smaller than my usual portraits.
Completed in around 3 weeks.

it is a great one and considering a bad quality reference 
the only thing maybe i find her viewer's right shoulder a little flat, but it's probably the reference's problem. overall very well controlled and balance visual!

Yeah it was a bad quality ref pic but I really wanted to draw it more than others I had found in better quality.

Wow, it's amazing how you can draw such a detailed piece from such a small ref. I can clearly see why you chose this ref. Even though the quality of the pic might not be that great, this drawing is still gorgeous. I think you did a great job with her expression and pose.

I can't stress how much difficulty I had with her face. What's worse was I would be drawing and I knew I had to sleep cos it was late and if I haven't fixed something in my drawing I can't sleep very well! I wake up and study it before I go to work knowing I can't do anything until I finish work and get home! That happened for almost a week, maybe longer because I just couldn't get her face right!
I'll try to retake another pic if I get the chance.

That must have been frustrating. Didn't you think about your drawing at work then too? Sometimes I have that, when I'm sitting in class I think about ways of how to improve a drawing.

Yes I did! Interesting to hear you had that feeling too! I would look at her face and study it carefully looking at what I might have done wrong and how I could improve it. Many times you reach a point when you've done enough and just want to finish the drawing. But I was determinated to work on the face even longer. It's hard to say if I would draw a person again so it's important I get it to look decent at least!

You're so right. I often see faces I would love to draw and then I look up pics and I find a lot of them that I would love to draw. But once I drew that person already I move on to the next and I still have a lot of refs of that person I want to draw.

I had to work up to Christmas Eve and on short notice I had to work on Boxing day which was really annoying! So I didn't have much time off work. I still need to check if I have to work on New Years day. I hope I don't have to!

Not exactly. With exams coming up I wasn't really in the mood to go shopping. My sister got me some art supplies though. Paints and brushes.
