Description A friend of mine drew a cute Corgi pup, using a photograph as reference. I liked the photograph enough to give it a shot myself. Voila'. The result.

first of all, this is my first ever critique and i hope it's helpful. i generally stay away from critiques because i don't feel like i'm qualified to write them, however, it feels right to write one for you. he's absolutely adorable! i love the way you made him come to life. i hope you turn him into one of your characters because i'd love to see more of him! You did an amazing job cartoonifying this pooch! he has so much character. he just looks like he's the type who's full of energy, mischief, joy, and fun. one who gets himself into trouble quite a bit. one you can't stay angry with. he looks like he's always ready to play. he also seems like the type who can't stay still (for very long.) i really like the way you colored this and the shading looks great. i also appreciate the fact that you kept some of the sketch lines, it's as if he can't stay still long enough for someone to take a photo of him or draw him (without it being blurry or having the shot have a sense of movement.) in other words, I can totally imagine him saying "are you done yet? how 'bout now? now? i want to go play!" i bet he loves life and is practically excited 24/7. i really like the art style you drew him with. i think it'd be helpful to see the photo you referenced so that we could compare the two and get a sense of how much work you put into this. (i hope that made sense.) in other words, it'd be nice to see your reference so that i can see how you made him come to life and what you added to it.

Any critique, as long as it is constructive, is welcome!

Thank you so very much for your kind comments. Nice to know that someone else likes the sketch lines. Heheh. Interesting how you compared them to an indication of a sense of motion/movement in the character. Cool perspective there.

As for the reference, I shall hunt again for the photograph and include a link to it!

Thanks, again!

I only believe in constructive critiques. I've never understood why some people would just comment with "I don't like this" or "this looks ugly" or even "this sucks." In my opinion, these types of comments shouldn't be given at all. They don't help anyone, instead they make people feel horrible. If my art skills and art style were more polished I'd feel more comfortable giving constructive critiques on other people's artwork. Oh well, I'll just do what I can.

You're so welcome! I really do think that sketch lines can totally add more to a drawing. Heehee, I'm glad you appreciated/liked my perspective on the sketch lines adding a sense of movement to the drawing.

Ooh, sweet! I just think it'd really be helpful to see what you were working with. It definitely gives context. Thank you for taking the time to look for it!

You're so welcome!!

Agreed whole-heartedly. I'm glad that we're of the same mind there!

Indeed! I like showing the skeleton of a sketch to show how the piece was constructed -- how the artist got to the conclusion. And, yes, I definitely appreciate what you had to say on that!

Absolutely, and you're welcome! The link is now up so that you can see the original photograph.

Thanks, again!!

It's a waste of everyone's time. I've had someone say "I don't like this." So I replied to them, "What don't you like about it so that I can work on improving." Their response was, "I don't know." I was left feeling really awkward because nothing they said helped me and I felt out of place.

I'm glad you do, I like seeing how people work. I'm glad you appreciated what I said.

Ooh, yay, thank you! I'll go take a look!

My pleasure!

Ha-ha. Yeah, if someone is going to critique a piece it should be constructive.

Definitely, and you're welcome!

Indeed, that way the person is given space to grow. It's like that one saying, "If you don't have anything nice to say, don't say it." (My take on this is if you can't find the words to encourage or give feedback on areas of possible improvement in a positive way, then don't say anything at all because you won't be helping anyone and will only be wasting time.)

After seeing the reference, I really like what you added to it. The puppy in the photo actually has sad eyes. I really like the smirk-grin you gave your character.

You're very welcome. Sorry for the really late reply though.

I'm doing alright. Oh! Happy Holidays! How was your holiday?
Well, on my journal, as of any news...I mentioned about getting a new car for Christmas. That was nice.

I've been holding back on sharing finished work on dA for a long while though.   I was gonna PM you about what's happening online and offline with me.

No worries!

Great to hear, and thank you! My Christmas was quite nice. That's so cool that you got a car!

Aww. Really? Well, if you'd like to explain further as to what's happening I'd love an update. Sounds like something's up.... Hope it's nothing serious.

This is just too cute for words
I imagine this is inspired by the Disney short Feast, it's playing in theaters before Big Hero 6

Aww, gee. Thank you!

Actually, this was inspired by a random photograph of a Corgi puppy, but Feast does look cute.
