Description More practicing doing colouring and I really like this, strugled a bit with the background but I like. Ok so going by what people have said about my previous works. The one thing that crops up the most is about more shading and more lighting and I've tried to embrace that with this image along with my best hair yet in my opinion. (Trying to improve!) Please comment/crit and help me improve what I am doing but please note I didn't use a tablet for this!

I am glad you say that the face seems very accurate although the colours I chose for the hair, makeup and lips were inspired by the original stock photo so I can't really take all that much credit for the colour choices here!

I'm sorry about how you feel with the black around the eyes I was just working from the stock image I used in all honesty. Although I can understand what you're saying.

I semi-agree with what you said about her breasts being too hight. Although speaking as a woman with 36F boobs I know if I put a push up bra on that my boobs too would be up there and so it's not impossible. Plush she's slightly bent over which would also alter the 'straight on' and 'stood straight up' points of view.

I'm sorry for how you feel about the hair but I am trying to improve. All my art is done on laptop touchpad and thus doing such things as hair proves very difficult in all honesty! I'll keep what you said in mind but in truth I don't think I did too bad of a job with the hair considering my previous hair! I am terrible with a mouse much much worse than with touch pad and I seriously can't afford a tablet.

See there's a lot of controversy about the text in the background as most think it simply shouldn't be there. Where as in my opinion I like it as it is.

I don't like the shading and shadowing as I feel it spoils the piece but apparently its in the right direction of realism so I'll keep learning and improving.

Thank you.

No problem, you'll learn. (:

You're right that 36F breasts could get that high, but that woman does not have 36F breasts

Also, it's kind of weird that you keep apologizing. Why are you sorry for my opinion? You shouldn't be sorry xD

She might. It's my art I can improve it any ways I wish ^__^ or ruin it in most cases.

Yes I'll lean... hehe.

I don't know I say sorry a lot. It's been pointed out to me a lot lately that I say sorry a lot I think it comes from my childhood as I was always in trouble and mostly it was because of problems between my parents which were taken out on me. But it was just easier to say sorry and hope for the best.

It's okay hon (: But you don't really have to explain yourself. The purpose of a critique is to show you things that could have been done better. You certainly don't need to be sorry. You just read it and take it into consideration and that's all you have to do! (:

This is a really nice picture! I love the colors you've got here. I love how smoothly the background coloring blends, however i feel as though it doesn't mix well with the girl you've drawn. she looks separate from the background, perhaps a little too blurred? Also i think the eye could use some work, i think the cornea in her eye is too small and the eyelashes are very random. Also try enhancing the lines in her hair and possibly add some shadows to her black top to give it a better 3d effect. All in all you've done a pretty good job, keep up the good work!

Thank you for the crit and lovely words!

I am glad you like the colouring and how I have done the background... Although it was an overly simple thing to do in all honesty. I am sorry you feel the background doesn't fit with the girl, quite sad... could you tell me why you feel that way?!!

Since reflection I will 100% agree that she shouldn't be that blured, infact on the grounds I haven't used the blur tools or masks I have no idea how my art works keep turning out this way!!!

I'd also agree about the eye, no excuses! In the stock picture she has no eye lashes... So I didn't do them!

I struggle with hair, I don't know if you read but all my art is done with laptop touch pad as I don't have a tablet and I fail with a mouse!!! So doing things like this isn't all that easy and hair seems to be my worst point!

I have so much improving to do but I thank you so much for your comment it helps, I also need to work more of shading and lighting as well as tones and texture ...so much to learn!!!

solo3991 In reply to missimoinsane [2011-07-22 20:06:16 +0000 UTC]

I tried doing digital art work once and it was such a FAIL, so for you to be able to do this is already a thumbs up for itself!

As for the background comment, it just seems that the girl is too bright for this very de-saturated, smooth background. Her hair has a lot of bright red streaks and you've mainly used strong colors in drawing her, so i suggest you either up your background colors a little, or soften the colors of the girl (i prefer the latter as it might make it a bit more realistic)
As for everything else, i think a tablet might do you well. You might want to invest in one as I've seen some pretty good work done with its help.

Keep it up mate!

Thank you very much for your kind words

I guess I can agree with you about the de-saturated and smooth background but it was intentional to enhance the figure infront. I am not very good with backgrounds, landscapes or scene works! But I am leanring.

I understand what you mean about softer colours this was simply an experiment to see how far to push things and get peoples wonderful opinions to help embrace my talents and such.

Thank you for your advice and again for the lovely comment xx xx

you're really well off when it comes to a thing called sfumato *spelling* which means "smokey edge" like around the chin area, but I'd say start defining clear crisp edges overtop that, use two planes of colour rather than one line to define an edge, like your wall bumping up against the ceiling. but back to the chin area, don't make the shift between planes so stark that it looks like one part doesn't have shadow and the other does, rather make the shift lightly, like the difference between two shades of white, similar but contrasting enough to know the difference.

Lastly, popular to contrary belief lineart really helps bring in a form, it's only when you shade it that you lose the "scaffolding" you created with the lineart and see through to the true form e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/wā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Wink)"/>

finally I would bring out your darks, your highlights are fine (not too bright, but not really dark) but your darks can be stressed to make them look brighter even when they're not.

I hope that helped you out! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sā€¦ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/>

That actually confused the hell out of me. But I think I understand what you mean. I know the areas of where to improve and I think you've touched a little on them and enhanced them with ways to do such improvements which is great. But I am overly confused with your explenations... IT WILL PROBABLY MAKE MORE SENSE WHEN I AM FEELING BETTER BUT TODAY I AM RATHER ILL BUT TRYING TO LEARN RATHER THAN JUST WAIST MY TIME DOING NOTHING. -- Sorry and thank you!

I was given this website [link] but that hurts my head. While it's full of useful information it's also information over load and I feel while I understand what I have to do and the concept of it I still don't really understand what I am to do to achieve what I want it that makes any sense lol...

Thank you for your help though!

Ps. I use laptop touch pad as I don't have a tablet and so I am limited compared to most people with pressure sensitivity and such when it comes to this type of art. Most tutorials and how too's etc are for tablet users and not touchpad/trackpad users!!!

First of all, I really like the subject matter and the colors here. Never can go wrong with red and black and an alternative lady. For me, I think this is a little too soft and the hair seems to not really flow into the picture. something about it makes it appear very separate from the background. Maybe a little more hard details would be nice on the skin/more definition. Maybe also a little more shading/highlights in the eyes and eye area. I think you did a fantastic job on proportions and shading for the most part. Keep up the great work.

Thank you very much indeed for what you said and I agree. While I believe I have come on leaps and bounds the things I have been reading comments/crits etc lead me to believe and realise some areas of which I could improve big time... I hope to take this and enhance my next/future pieces. Thank you very much for your lovely comment and helpful advice

1. I seriously need to redo this piece of work. The hair will be the same colour but done much better now I have a tablet.

2. You can not say this. I recently went from raven black dyed hair to bleach blonde. It doesn't matter if your hair is dyed or natural black. Natural black is only really really really dark dark brown! You with need lots of bleaching and will ruin your hair but there is no reason why you can't go bleach blonde and put a red on it.

but im soooooooooooooo afraid of bleaching! my sister did it and her hair is like straw
I've only dyed my hair once and its now an auburn color. Well only cause i tried to use a box of loreal red without bleach.

missimoinsane In reply to ZenRumi [2011-10-24 06:14:30 +0000 UTC]

Yeh when I did it recently I followed some advice from a hairdressr and my hair started snapping and was really bad. My hair was about half way down my back and I had to get it cut and layered above my shoulders. Since then I used a mask stuff which was very expensive every other day and after about 2 months my hair started feeling normal. I then got a trim so it was back short and layered above my shoulders and recently I have dyed it dark brown to match the rest of m hair... and it's in a much better condition than 5 months ago when I totally destroyed my lovely long hair be careful. Having said that it's only the 2nd time that's happened to me and I've bleached my hair 100's of times and from black to blonde around 50ish times over the last 8 years or so.

You did this on a touch pad? Riiiiiiiight I know you can't see it, but I'm bowing down to you about as far as I possible can right now, I can't even begin to do something half as good as this using a mouse even!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

missimoinsane In reply to Kujjles [2011-08-01 14:54:24 +0000 UTC]

I do all my digital art work on laptop touch pad. Thank you for the bowing I find using a mouse to be very difficult and I don't have the penies for a tablet. So touchpad it is. I've had over 7 years of practice and I've only just gotten to this stage. There are more improvements since this piece entitled 'Secrets' so perhaps go look at them? Upto you! Thank you for the lovely comment I'm glad you're impressed although it's easy once you get use to it - kinda.

I'm really impressed by the panther drawing too! Very pretty, very smooth ^^

It's not easy for me, no matter how much I try, but then again, when your touch pad is kinda screwy, I guess you can't really talk to much. XD However you gotta admit, a screwy touchpad would definitely be hard to draw with XD Good work once again though! ^^

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

missimoinsane In reply to Kujjles [2011-08-02 17:44:09 +0000 UTC]

Screwy touchpad's usually mean you have the settings for sensetivity too high or too low. Go into control pannel, look for the mouse and then change the 'slow' 'fast' speed and see how the touchpad reacts. I have mine about 2/3rds towards 'fast'.

Also thank you for what you said

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

Kujjles In reply to missimoinsane [2011-08-02 19:04:29 +0000 UTC]

Hmmn, I'll try that, cause it'd be really nice for it to quit being screwy and stuff, especially for like, the MMOs and minecraft <.< >.> Thanks, I probably should've jumped to that conclusion at some point but I didn't XD And it's nice to speak with someone who has any kind of answer aside from "Ope, just use a plug in mouse or something"

I really like how the details turned on on this one, especially the piercings and her cleavage.
Also, the lines are very well-defined, good job, as is the hair.
Simply love that background

However, I'd advise you to work over the areas you've left solid black, as hardly anything is ever solid black. I found it a good practice to paint a friend with dark hair wearing a black tee with white acrylics only to a solid black canvas. Gotta find that picture somewhere.. Working a little with dull greens on that part would give you a nice effect

Furthermore, as much as I like the hair, it does look a little too solid on the edges. If you would just implement a few individual hairs this would probably do the trick.

Anyway, this is a very nice piece I like a lot and I DO think you have impoved a lot lately

I don't like this one, looked at it too much. I am pleased with how I improved but it's a bit of a slap up improvement which I've already bettered in the space of all of one deviation (in my opinion) but it was a great starting point and really helped embrace that next stage.

I totally agree with what you have said as far as improvements go and I will be working on something new next week I have a few other things to take care of first!

I like the hair, but it could have been better.

I'm glad you like it and thank you for the wonderful comment.

ISolitude In reply to missimoinsane [2011-07-26 01:53:12 +0000 UTC]

Mmm, that's not true! Yes, if you had more money I wouldn't recommend anything less than the Wacom Intuos (XD) but it that's unrealistic, you might be happier getting a cheaper off-brand tablet and waiting a year or two to get a really nice one. A good friend of mine uses an off-brand (Evidently you can get one for 60 USD [link] )

Of course, if you do buy a cheaper one, I recommend you read reviews and stuff first, but that's just a suggestion anyway. I don't blame you if you'd just rather wait. x)

missimoinsane In reply to ISolitude [2011-07-26 13:51:03 +0000 UTC]

I wanted a Wacom Cintiq but I guess an Intuos4 would be good but would settle for Wacom Bamboo Touch and Fun (the silver one with pen and touch sensitivity!) ...But even then I'd want it at a larger size which would be a lot of money... Which I don't have ...

If you win the lottery or have a spare mass of money... would you buy me one?!!

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

ISolitude In reply to missimoinsane [2011-07-26 14:49:38 +0000 UTC]

I don't know why people are so obsessed with the best. Look at it this way: a tablet the size of your touch pad would be an improvement over using your finger on the touchpad, especially with pen sensitivity. You'd be fine on a $60 tablet, that's what my first was like

.... but yes, if I win the lottery, tablets for all! XD

šŸ‘: 0 ā©: 1

missimoinsane In reply to ISolitude [2011-07-27 13:35:13 +0000 UTC]

Thank you for buying me a tablet if you win the lottery - *loves you* lol.

Yeh I don't know why I prefer to work as big as possible. I like being able to put things comfortably on my lap so like a big book or my laptop etc big space so it's less rocky and such and more secure and comfy to work with...

Even a $60 tablet is too much money atm! Even wacom used versions are still quite a bit of money (this is in Euro [link] )
