Description Acrylic paint on canvas board.
C.A. 20 hours of work.

This painting is created for an Art Exchange.
My assignment was to create for the following;
"Your interpretation of a spirit of rebirth and renewal based off of or somehow inspired by a Magpie (possibly but not necessarily playing off the fact that magpies are scavengers) interacting with a spirit of nurturing and safety, based off of or somehow inspired by some kind of seahorse or leafy/weedy sea dragon. You can make them as animal-like or humanoid as you wish (Fairies? Dragons? Anthro? Spiffed up, magical magpies and seahorses? Whatever else comes to mind, really?). Both, however, are genderless (and sexless) spirits."

When I read the words "spirit of rebirth" I saw the phoenix in my mind's eye. The bird that rises from the ashes. I knew that that's what I'd be playing on with the Magpie by trading out it's usual blue-green tones for a hint of fire. In person, it's got a more of a copper feel to it's usual blue-black feathers.
I chose to echo the colourings between the bird and the background by having a sunset/sunrise (deliberately ambiguous) behind it.

Nurturing and safety is often symbolized by a pregnant woman, so obviously I had to make the seahorse/dragon (it ended up a little bit of an amalgam) pregnant. I also incorporated a symbol of creation.
I know that by making the seahorse pregnant I left a clear hint that it's not sexless, but the full round belly was worth it I think.
I also incorporated more of the glowing yellow sun-symbolism in the seahorse as well as a Celtic symbol of creation/creativity in the being.

I also placed it on the border of water and earth as that's where "life" is easiest to symbolize, leaning comfortably against a sheer rock wall, perfectly safe in a spot which others would find intimidating at least.
Further leaving a hint of a meeting of extremes.

Life and death.

Their interaction is "intended" to be a simple sharing of knowing glances, but I understand if that point doesn't come across clearly, what with the eyes not being the sort to carry clear emotional signs.

Hey there! Is there any chance I could obtain a version of this without the DA watermark? I'm putting together a notebook full of art and letters to remind me that things will be okay, and I want to print a copy of this for it.

WOW. Wow wow wow.

This is beautiful. The colors, especially, but everything, really. The leafy-stuff on the seahorse-dragon and the wings on the magpie are just fantastic.

I think we were completely on the same page with my request and your interpretation~ Everything about this fits so perfectly what I had in my head, but at the same time it's all wonderful and unique and well-thought-out.

All of the symbolism is so so great. The life-and-death juxtaposition, especially, which is something that in general means a lot to me. It's all executed in such a beautifully clear-but-subtle way.

Also, pregnant or not, I think the seahorse-dragon is sufficiently ambiguous. I mean, being a hybrid of a seahorse and a mythical creature with no particularly set biology, who's to say that they didn't simply self-fertilize?

Thank you so so so so so much for this. <3 Oh my goodness~

I'm really.. REALLY happy you like it.

I like to think I have an ability to produce, in my work, the "feel" that people are after, when they ask me to draw for 'em.

That's really neat!

Though I have to say that male sea horses are the ones that carry the babies and not the females.

xD I assumed because you said "pregnant woman", but I might have read wrong (wooo long weekends with family).

^^ It's really a beautiful piece, I love the style.
