For those blasting this photo because they believe it to be undeserving of a DD, remember:
A DD is NOT an award, it is solely a feature, for something a Gallery Moderator sees fit for being seen on a wider scale. It is not solely based on artistic merit, contrary to popular belief.
My personal thoughts on this picture: while it is certainly not the most eyecatching or spectacular piece, it is certainly provoking enough.
Didn't one person describe it as a picture of silence? To me, it seems like a part of infinity. All the white and all. Maybe purgatory would be something like this, except smaller. I'm... making sense, yes?

Now ya see, someone previously mentioned something about 'Husband's tragic death'. I don't know if this has anything to do with the artist or photo, but that statement combined with 'purgatory' kind of fits together in the puzzle and gives it more meaning, and gives the viewer more understanding to appreciate the piece.
For now I'm content with my assumption I guess... still would like to hear it from the artist though, to know the absolute truth.

This picture is, in my opinion, the epitome of perfect minimalism.
The not clearly defined area between ground and sky is what I find the most amazing- it is baffling that there are places on this earth where the land and sky seem to touch, and even mix, making a solid block of color.
The point of this picture, for me, at least, is not that it is a picture of a fisherman on a lake. Anybody can take a picture of a person on a lake, it takes no skill or creativity to do that.
But this, THIS is taking a picture in a way that it becomes ART.
The only reason people say bad things about this is because they do not have the understanding or intelligence to appreciate fine art.
I love this, this is a well deserved DD.

People can understand fine art (and be intelligent) and still not like it. I don't agree with people leaving inappropriate comments on a piece of work, but that's different. I can appreciate the fact that this work has a place in the art community, and I can understand why it would be given a DD, but I don't actually like the piece myself. Now that isn't the same as me saying the piece isn't good, all art has it's place, and all art is going to be liked and disliked, that in itself is the very essence of art. To say somebody is unintelligent if they don't appreciate a piece of fine art is a little blinkered in my opinion.

Astonishing the mixed opinions minimalism can have.
Well done on the DD, nice shot.

I too would have liked to see the fisherman a little bit closer, but then you wouldn't have been able to get the crack in the foreground in the picture, and i really like that part of it. And i was happy to see this as a DD. I think it is original, and to me, thought provoking. I like the fact that there is a lot to look at, and at the same time, nothing (if that makes sense). I also like the color and grain; to me, it makes it seem more 'real'. Great job and congrats on the DD. (p.s. don't let anyones comments get you down. it is YOUR art, and not theirs, therefore, only your opinion on it matters!)

Wow I can't believe how many people can be so critical. Personally I love this photograph, it is very successful in capturing the feelings of emptiness and loneliness.
I saw that a few people felt that it would be more successful if a few of the fishermen were closer and I have to wholeheartedly disagree. The fact that the area is populated well enough, yet everyone is so far away from the viewer adds to the isolation.
I also feel that the shade of white is perfect for this image. Loneliness isn't a crisp white landscape, it is dull and it is grey and it is mostly empty (which contrary to popular belief-white is not) and I think this photo reflects those emotions perfectly.

I think the guys could've been just a little bit closer, but I like this a bit. I don't mind simplistic things sometimes, it just looks nice and clean.
"I dunno why this is a DD blahblahblah" Take it up with the GD kthxbye.
Don't like it? Move on. The GD obviously liked it or they wouldn't have put it up/
Or they just wanted to stir shit and you're just making them lol.

....I normally don't like to disapprove of Daily Deviations because they're usually VERY well deserved

do you often see reality in front of your eyes as a white canvas with a few smudges, a small crack and dots ?
i don't, personally.
and if you did see it, this immense space in front of you, this huge crack on the ice, those fishermen in the distance, you wouldn't even care to take a photograph ?
this is not a bathroom myspace picture damnit. it has value.

comments don't all have to be positive- if they did, it would kind of defeat the purpose of artist response

I'm allowed a comment on the artwork, regardless if it's a DD or not. Comments don't all have to be "OMG i love this"- basically i you express why u like something, i should e able to express why i dont. btw, Clearly "OMG amazing" helps just s as much as "seriously WTF"
If someone doesn't like my work, they're free to express so on the comments section, that is why it's there! If you don't want any negative comments, then disable them- yes that also means you have to sacrifice the posititve ones, but that how life works!

i don't think you're understanding me.. if you have an issue with a GM's decision...go to the GM. the artist being featured is not the GM, so if you can't understand why this piece was chosen, it doesn't mean you just post that comment on someone's personal work. if you're in a restaurant, you don't yell at the food telling it you don't like it... you go to the cook, right?
of course you're allowed to make an opinion of someone's work, but how are they going to apply a "wtf" to their work and improve? i'm not saying be a rosy love fest person, but it's a community of people looking for an actual critic... yeah you can say "omg amazing" but that's just saying they like it... it doesn't say what's a strong point that they should focus on developing, but at least they know they're on the right track. if you've got someone saying..."i hate this" what do you hate, and how should they go about improving? what is the point of being apart of a community of people focusing on improving if people won't explain where to improve.
if i don't like your work, i'd never go to your piece and say "i hate it"...that's like walking up to a person on the street and saying you hate them and walking away... it's random and confusing i would think. if i dislike something, i'll tell you why, and if i have any advice that's significant, i'll share it. that's what a critic is. we may not be able to see each other since we're online, but i'm still going to treat each person as if i'm face to face with them.

thats bull crap. im sorry but u acting like you have to give some huge artistic critique and method for improvement just when don't like something. "OMG i love this" is just as constructive as " i don't like this"; you just don't like the latter cause it's negative. Why a i critized when 80% on this site are all purely meangingless and unhelpful smiles and lol's?

There are many positive comments towards this deviation, and many people obviously like it.
I'm just stating my two cents
