This is just what it is in its whole beauty.
I love frozen lakes and winter, emptiness of the landscape, silence and cold and all this comes out of here.
I'm glad you got a DD on this.
It shows DD aren't always clichΓ©s and pre-eaten stuff.

After reading practically every comment and digging for more information, I believe I've gotten my enlightenment on the piece and can say, I now appreciate it for what it is. The message is sad, from my assumed viewpoint, but gives off a feeling of peace, or silence for the dead.
This is just a piece where you've just got to look for a while, to start to understand, and maybe dig for the desired information. This photograph is like a puzzle the viewer must take the time to solve.
Additionally, I'm sorry for your loss, you are very strong.

It would have been nice if you went into further detail in the description and not just the title.
I honestly have no idea what I'm looking at. I see a lined track made in snow small rocks in the distance? The title wouldn't suggest that but all I see are some unrecognizable dots, a trail(?), and a blank background of nothing but white.
I just wish there was a better way of comprehending any sort of message there is other than pure confusion.
I mean jeez, would have been common courtesy for the staff member to enlighten a bit with some words on the piece.
Anywho, grats on the DD I s'pose.

Congratulations ~million-dandelions for receiving a Daily Deviation! I might not be knowledgeable in this genre of photography, but what I wouldn't do to create photography like these! The magnitude of scale you have portrayed and the implications of that to life's (our) place in earth, is something to deeply ponder about! And I do feel a bit lonely when seeing this.
And now...
To whom it may concern: To all those who thinks this deviation is not DD (a feature) worthy and wondering why and that they have the right to state their opinions
If you do not understand how this is a DD at all, or by some wondrous chance, find yourself looking with your eyes and see smudges and 50% opacity, 25% flow hard edged brush smudge all things reality, and/or upon the impression that we are trying to force your artistically tasteful minds to accept this piece as a daily feature, then this is what you should do:
yes you have a right to give the opinion, but for the society you and we are leaving in, keep it formal, and if you don't approve it explain clearly with support and help why and how it can be improved and not going to the all sorts of "wonderous" comments you have left!
Note/ask the GM or do what FAQ #873: What do I do when I disapprove of a Daily Deviation feature? offers your perception of what DD should be to make the "wrong to a right" and save the world of dA from "poor DDs"! Because it's not wise to let your freedom of speech harm someone, which they didn't deserve, and would make you a wise person to do the right thing by doing what you can to stop these. It would be unfortunate who fought for freedom of speech and rights to see/read/hear how you have been using it!
If you don't know nothing about this genre, then you should research some before using your freedom of speech. We are all educated right? Otherwise, if you are already an able wealth of knowledge in this field, do follow the point above to save us!
Do suggest DDs yourself and try to realize that we are not trying to force your precious mind to accept anything, but that if you do not like something, say it in a proper way and do something to solve it, not leave your freedom of speech to ruin someone's day. And what you did was not a critique either!
Thank you and hope this didn't severely stomp on your precious freedom of speech
And if there are any grammatical errors or any wrong, please do use your freedom of speech to correct my grammar in a proper way!

I love it. What this evokes in me trumps any technical aspects, which are frankly irrelevant here. If the subjects were clearer, the picture would become about them and this beauty would be lost. It's perfect as it is.

I read a lot of the comments and had to stop because I feel that thereβs a growing trend among some young people here. Its one thing to have an opinion and another to simply discard something without understanding it. Iβm not a big fan of minimalistic photography (like this one) but I can certainly appreciate the beauty of this shot. What makes me sad is that people are so conditioned to "like" something that is so in the box. Sort of a preconceived notion that when a photo like this one comes out and gets a DD, their head is such much up their asses they can even see beyond it.
But thatβs OK, youβre not supposed to understand everything, it takes time and an open mind to let a photograph like this come inside. That is why I love what this picture represents.

Well I see that an opinion can have a reaction either way. I'm not assuming I know everything there is to know about art, or photography and whatever medium of expression exists out there. If you are offended by my words then you're assuming I'm directing them straight to you which I'm not... I have no clue who you are. I never stated that I know what everyone in the world feels about this picture but I have read enough comments about this picture to make up my mind about the relevance of certain people making these statements. See, the question is not if this picture is good or not, this is completely irrelevant here. The point is that when you have an opinion about something, you can't just say "I hate it because it's boring" or "This picture is nothing". Its an easy way out, tell us why you think its boring or empty, a real opinion backed by an intelligent development of thought that actually has a weight in this discussion.
You seem like an unhappy person by the way you need to put others down to feel superior, that a little sad to me. But again you have the right to say whatever you want.

But again you have the right to say whatever you want.
Then why bother wasting your time typing up this rather lengthy comment that will inevitably have no bearing on how I view myself as a person whatsoever?
If you really and truly believed I had the right to my opinion, you wouldn't have felt the need to devote so much time and energy to replying to my comment.
You seem like an unhappy person by the way you need to put others down to feel superior, that a little sad to me.
SEEM being the operative term there. But way to project your own ideas and feelings onto a total stranger.
You have no idea what my purpose was, in making ANY of these comments, nor am I obligated to explain them to you. You have NO logic on which to base your assumption that my goal was to feel superior, which of course it wasn't.
I believe that people should have the right to say that they don't like something, without some lame ass white knights coming along to invalidate their opinions. Communicating THAT was my goal.
You have no idea what kind of a person I am, and you should be ashamed of yourself for implying that you do. I seriously doubt anyone could possibly know, just based on the comments I've made on this thread, what kind of person I am in real life.
That would be like trying to convince the seashore that you know exactly what it's like, when the closest you've come to seeing it is holding a single grain of sand.
And I did go to the trouble to list what I didn't like about the image. Scour through this thread and you will find it. Or don't. It's of no consequence to me.

Honestly I don't care about what people think about this shot... I really couldn't care less. What gets to me, and I'm not saying everyone does this, is when people have a negative opinion about anything without a reason behind it. They don't need to explain it to me but in the real world words matter and if you are ready to talk the talk, you gotta walk the walk. That's all! I do respect your thoughts and how strong you feel about it. That's refreshing!

My dislike for this piece isn't actually what I was feeling strongly about. This image does nothing for me personally. I would never have chosen it to be a DD. But I don't care enough about it to hate it.
What irked me were the sanctimonious comments left by those who absolutely loved the piece, who commented to say so, but who seemed to think it was their duty to apologize for and invalidate all differing opinions.
The amusing thing is that these folks were also claiming the moral high ground, despite the fact that their comments weren't any more or less inconsiderate than anyone else's.
I call that righteous anger syndrome, when people believe that they should have the right to speak their mind, while oppressing their peers in the process.
And the assumption that the only reason someone might have for disliking something is jealousy or bitterness, is about the stupidest thing I've heard in a long time.

I feel so saddened on the behalf of all the people who cannot appreciate the message in this photo.
I personally feel saddened by all the people who don't seem to realize that artistic taste is individual and that others are entitled to dislike something, or at least, not to be as madly in love with it as someone else.
Not having the freedom to hold certain opinions about something as subjective as artwork, THAT'S what's sad here.
Saying you feel sorry for someone, because they don't share your opinion about something, is about the most narcissistic crock of doo-doo I've heard in a long time.

I do understand the message, but artistically i find tremendously underwhelming and mundane. Because...theres really not much to look at. Yes it's symbolic of man's loneliness and isolation, and the gravity of how small he really is in this world, but i hope there would be a more artistically appealing way to show it.

"i find tremendously underwhelming"
It's minimalism, underwhelming sort of goes hand in hand with the art form, perhaps it is not too your taste but it is brilliantly done here.
"but i hope there would be a more artistically appealing way to show it."
The photo is a masterpiece of composition with the smallest amount of material to work with, again, maybe you do not "like" it, but its artistic value runs deeper than your ability to perceive.

I do not fault you for your opinion at all. But sometimes sitting in profound silence with someone is the best way to hear everything they want to say. I find that this photo represents that form of expression wonderfully. When you use the term "artistically appealing", I am not sure at all what you mean, because to me, "art" is expression, and as I explained, something has been expressed here.
But hey, I do not wish to pick a fight at all, because we all have different opinions. I am just happy I am lucky enough to know how to listen to a silence or an emptiness.
