it's different to create tiny red dots on a white canvas, as opposed to find red dots in an empty landscape.
not comparable at all...

yes so give him a medal for the hike, artistically however it's artistically mundane. Take a picture from the top of everest, and it's just a completely white shot- Congrats on the hike, but you're no van gouh.

so you have to shoot certain types of landscapes to be a good artist ? On earth there are lascapes that are full of details, and others that are dry and empty. Why would one lascape win over another and have more "artistic merit" ?

Not at all, but photography is all about showing and convincing. Show me something amazing, and convince me it is. This like my everst example showes me somethign amazing, but because doesn't convince me of anything. As i said having in up close shot of one of the fisherman's face in 1/3 of the shot, and then the vast lake as the background, would of showed and convinced any audience sufficiently.

At first, I was unsure what this deviation was about. I thought it was a conceptual piece, perhaps oil on canvas or a digital piece.
After seeing that it was a photograph, I still have many questions. Where was this piece taken? How far away was this photographed from the distant subjects? What were you trying to convey?
I'm sorry that I don't see your vision with this submission, but it does get me thinking.

That being said, I might have appreciated it more if there was an artist's comment. You're Russian, and English might be difficult for you. Perhaps write the comment in Russian, stating what it means to you, and if someone wants, they can translate it.
Unelss the point is to make people come up with their own interpretation.

Hym, this picture doesn't do anything for me. I just feel that there isn't enough shown, and it's impossible to tell what it is without the title. If the title was "polar bear in a blizzard" people would laugh, and not take it seriously.
That being said, I imagine if in a gallery, I'd just pass it by. However, I'm confused why the staff would choose this one. You, the artist, is clearly talented, and has a lot more to offer. I had DA choose a weird piece of mine to feature, too... I guess you can't really choose !

well the gm's don't pick the piece, specifically from my understanding...it's the person who suggested the actual piece, and the gm chooses whether to feature the person....hopefully that doesn't sound all turn aroundy and confusing. ^^

Asher-Bee In reply to Exillior [2010-04-22 10:22:04 +0000 UTC]
no, i mean, when that gm is given a suggestion, like my friend gets...she told me the piece i suggested wasn't as "strong" as the others in the gallery by that person. pretty much meaning, she wanted me to look again for a better piece to suit the person's strength. i know each gm is different, but she really tries not to pick out her own DD suggestions and looks toward the community to feature one. ^^

oh i love your comments!
"No individual person has a feel or knowledge about all artistic domains."
"I do not have a feel for every form of artwork on earth. I do not know everything about photography, for example. We all have limits."
"But just because it doesn't make us go starry-eyed, doesn't mean it is not actually excellence in a certain form of art."

hmm.. well their should be someone policing the DDs we can all be critical without being snobs or cruel. ^^

Exillior In reply to Asher-Bee [2010-04-22 23:04:06 +0000 UTC]
I guess that would defeat the purpose of free speech, though. The DDs are a feature like any other feature on dA, and if they're being policed for nasty comments, then so should other deviations, really.
In reality, the artist can report any of the comments made on their work. Also, it's possible for us to report a specific comment even if it's not on our page: FAQ #238: How do I report people for abuse, harassment, or another issue I may think is a violation?

well, I sometimes see "suggested by blah blah"
which led me to assume that sometimes the GMs may pick a piece they like. But I could really be wrong.

well from what i understand from a friend of mine who's doing the GM thing..it seems like she doesn't pick out what piece she wants to unless she "has to" meaning, she's not getting any suggestions from people. otherwise, she's looking at the pieces, and tries to give merit to pieces she finds different and inventive...usually ^^

Actually, my first thought on this was: "... what". Is this a photo? I guess that if it had a visible fisherman, I'd be less confused 'bout this :/
But its ok, anyway. Congrats, then.

If your getting negative comments then I geuss your doing what you want! And alot of people wont comment on photos if they dont like them so atlest your getting opinion! I personally didnt find it eye catching till i got to see it in full view. just a photo that makes you wonder. Which I like. So all you people should stop bitching about what other comments say. Dont put up your artwork if you dont wana get negative and positive comments.
Good Work!
