they're Fire Emblem characters in Smash Bros, the joke is that in Robin's game (Fire Emblem Awakening) you can allow him/her to marry any other character you want and there are no canon pairings

Let's be honest, much like how the game has Chrom x Sumia as the main Chrom pairing, they've got Robin x Tharja as the main Robin pairing. They wouldn't have Tharja like Robin as much as she does if it wasn't for that reason.

not necessarily, Chrom/Sumia I would agree with since she's pretty much the default if you didn't pick a wife for him yet, but the whole point of Robin is customization, that's why he/she can marry anyone in the game
besides, by that logic Cordelia should be Chrom's canon wife because she really likes him

But there is always a default canon, even in the Fire Emblem series despite the characters having multiple choices for a spouse. Robin is canonically supposed to be male despite the fact you can play as a female version, which obviously means none of the "husbands" can be canon. Looking at Robin's list of potential wives, Tharja is really the only one that makes sense given their interactions.
As for Cordelia, it's obvious that the game really wanted to repeat history by making the Chrom/Marth, Sumia/Caeda, Cordelia/Catria love triangle.

now I could be wrong, but I've never seen or heard any kind of proof that there are any default couples in Awakening besides Chrom/Sumia, and the only reason for that is because Chrom needs to get married at some point for plot reasons. you don't even have to get anyone else married at all
either way, I based this joke off of the idea that Robin is a customizable avatar character, it's less about canon and more about all the different options he has

Technically most of the female cast have to get married too, otherwise characters like Cynthia, Noire, Owain, and the rest of the future children wouldn't even exist. Their default/canon spouse would be the one who makes the most sense from going over each and every Support Conversation and other aspects of each character. So far the only ones I can determine to be canon are Robin x Tharja, Lon'qu x Sully, and Gaius x Lissa. I'm still doing research to determine the rest, but some are very difficult...like Olivia.

the future children aren't required though, they're more like bonus characters, and you can tell from their official artworks that they don't have canon fathers
just because it makes the most sense doesn't mean it's canon; yes, some support conversations suggest that certain characters get along better than others, but "making sense" still has a lot to do with one's opinion, Judging by their supports I personally think Olivia and Virion go together like macaroni and cheese but I wouldn't consider them a canon couple because of that
