In Damascus and Aleppo, there are entire markets that solely sell spices - you can actually smell them blocks away!
I was also told that the old city of Jerusalem used to smell like that before the Arab Israeli conflict but not anymore- apparently itβs completely "touristified"

LoL, I always say that if Syria ever opened up to the world in a tourism sense, Jordan would be obliterated- everything we have, they have ten fold! and I mean that quite literally!
I think its safe to say that Jordan and Palestine/Israel take a week to completely cover, whereas Syria and Egypt would probably take three weeks to see!

one thing i note is absence of A/C, fans everywhere..
is arabic food really that spicy? i thought indian and mexican had that distinction

Amman is not really Hot, so we use fans for circulation, besides they are way cheaper and more portable than A/C's.
I wouldn't say that we are "Hot" spicy, its more like we have a wide variety of flavours, because of the spices.

rice eh? rice, wheat and corn are the foundations of civilization. forget philosophy. no food no brain.
thank you for your efforts. i really do want to know more about middle east and all the little everyday things you people do over there. leaders and ideology are not the essense.

no problem, and that's very true, leaders and ideologies come and go.

Smells like the old city of Jerusalem, or parts of downtown Haifa.
