Description this is poorly lit... and so it lacks some of the detail and richness of the original... but... well, i wanted to post it and get some feedback... and i was too lazy to set up a copy stand or butterfly lighting...

What are your secrets to actually getting the emulsion to transfer?! I've been trying to get back into this, but for the life of me cannot get the emulsion to stick! Even the thought of doing something this ambitious is over my head at the moment.

Ironically, the very first transfer I ever attempted was the only one that was a real success....

Congratulations... it's fantastic!

god, it has been years since i did one...

i assume you know the basics?... wet the paper that is receiving the image (fairly damp, but not soaked)... make sure you doing the work on a flat surface... allow 10-14 seconds of development, then move quickly once you tear the image from polaroid backing ... make sure that you use a squeegee (or something like it) to make sure the polaroid is evenly tight against the receiving paper (to ensure proper development)... use your hands to keep the polaroid warm (this helps with contrast)... once the development is done, remove the polaroid carefully...

that is about it...

Mike, this is stunning! Apropos multiples....
This is the exact sample of what multiples are good for! So, well, I've wasted my words for nothing... you know everything better and before....

OK. More practically now: looking again and much close obsrvation, the origin of your work reminded me wood engraving or a water color painting... quite "plane", like many details were lost during the time or the process... It has its own charm, really, like trying to complete missing information in hand's writing...
Well done, my friend! Keep on daring!

wow... thanks, ilil!...

actually, you really do understand the work... well... especially the 'trying to complete missing information' element which i stressed with the space between elements in the grid... not everyone catches that...

oh... and for what it is worth, the origin is a large collage i made... if that matters...

Nine almost perfect transfers
I tried transfers plenty of times, but always failed
The emulsion dye won't stick to the receptor paper. I'm going to study that reference you posted...

Maybe you could post a detailed crop of it. That reminds me of the times when it was possible to upload preview images for jpgs. You could have combined them....

mgilpin In reply to rawimage [2006-12-06 18:00:42 +0000 UTC]

i'll try and post a detail of the piece in my scraps today...

(chuckle)... funny thing is/was that was the first time i tried transfers... granted i really took my time doing it... but i got fairly lucky...

oh... do you wet the receptor paper before you apply the polaroid?... and do you keep it warm with your hand during the process?... those were the two tricks i was taught...

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

rawimage In reply to mgilpin [2006-12-08 12:36:23 +0000 UTC]

I wet the paper with warm water, but i don't warm it with my hand... and I'm not sure if I used 669... I believe it was a 89 and 87

I'm hoping the 600 SE I won shows up this week. Be fun to run some 669 through it and see how that Mamiya lens performs.
