Description first idea sketch for anarchypress.

um. she's supposed to be both muslim and indian, from, i can't remember, the 1800s? i've tried looking up the appropriate dress (because muslim fashion differs from country to country), and am having difficulty, so i settled on some pretty indian wear.

if anyone has better knowledge of what muslims wear/would have worn in india, please enlighten me!

Beautiful work with the expression! That grin is simultaneously enticing and cunning. I love the subtle but very effective placement of the eyebrows especially, really draws my eye to hers.

I have a friend from India and she is Muslim, she says that the veil would hang to one side...then the other coming under to the chin, so one hangs one comes to chin. The Bimbi is only in Hinduism...so that wouldn't be there, but your picture is great love.

Relax, the only thing out of place is the Bindhiya. You've done an awesome job with this, I can even name the region she might have been from(Rajhistan).

I'm Pakistani... and well, 50 years ago I would have been an Indian Muslim.

I'm glad you don't have a stereotypical view of Muslim women. Not all women drape themselves from head to toe and cover their hair and stuff. Infact most females I know including myself don't bother . It's only the conservative and religious people who're into it.

Aah..and ofcourse. This is beautiful, Love the way you've drawn her! The expression is amazing, yummy lineart and colors

She looks wicked!

*cough* About Pre-partition India:

Saris, saris, saris. That's all the women wore! If she was married, she's have taken the pallu (end of sari, the part that drapes off the shoulder) and wrapped it around her back and over here head, much like you've done in this picture.

Also, you may have to be specific where in India she's from. Women of different regions wore different types of saris (like dresses. There's more than one way a dress looks, but the basic principle of the dress is the same). If you're going to make her spout out religion, then she'd be more covered up. If not, then wearing a sari with her hair covered is fine. I personally think that for her outfit, try to get an idea of where she's from a little more. The religion part would affect her demeanor and personality more than it would appearance, unless she's a bit of an extremist.

I hope that helps! It's a great picture and you have one very multi-dimensional character! Good Luck!

How have you been, Meg? This looks great! She does look pretty evil though, with the sneer and the serpentine neck. Was that intentional?

Hey, I'm sorry to bother you, and I'm totally ok with you saying no, but I have this character on LiveJournal who looks exactly like your deviation "budir". Would you mind if I made an icon of it, with proper credit to you? Thanks for your time!

Oh, and if you still need info on clothing from that time period and style, for that character I mentioned, I've done a fair bit of research on the subject and would recommend:
- Indian costume by G. S. Ghurye. Popular Prakashan: Bombay (1966)
- Arte Tessile e costumi dell'India. Textile art and costumes of India. by The International Centre of Arts and Costume. All India Handloom Board. Palazzo Grassi: Venezia (1956)
- Costumes of India and Pakistan; A Historical and Cultural Study by S.N. Dar. D.B. Taraporevala Sons: Bombay (1969)
- Indian costumes in the collection of the Calico Museum of Textiles by Goswamy, B. N. India : The Museum, Sarabhai Foundation: Ahmedabad, (1993).

Those are all specialty books, but there are a whole lot more that would only have a page or two. You can try your local university/college library and look in the 'costuming' or 'theater production' section.

If you can't get them at your library, I could scan some pictures.

You never cease to amaze me. She's gorgeous, and I think that her costume looks just fine for the design. If her face were covered up, you probably wouldn't be able to represent her attitude and personality in the way you intended. You made a good choice for the costume.

yea this is pretty cool but i mean woulda muslim woman be showing that much of her face or hair ?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

megrar In reply to Ferugie [2006-05-04 15:29:53 +0000 UTC]

depends on where she is, i think. we think of the all-over covered woman, dressed in straight black, only eyes showing. and she will have a veil, but, i know muslim women where i live show their faces and wear colors and such. different places will interpret the requirements differently, or relax them (especially since oftentimes, things like that are more a matter of tradition and culture than actual religious law, and there are acceptable times and places to be uncovered). which is why i'm wondering about muslim indians.

Ferugie In reply to megrar [2006-05-04 17:01:12 +0000 UTC]

hmm yea i know what you mean. But yea like the american muslims that i know who are female dont show their hair it has to do with some sort of modesty of their religion.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

greenCircle In reply to Ferugie [2006-07-13 03:52:54 +0000 UTC]

Muslim women aren't supposed to show their hair or body to maintain their modesty, which is why they wear loose clothing with long sleeves and long pants and skirts. In some places, people wear the coverall black thing because it...well...covers all. They can wear shorts or whatever's comfortable for them underneath, even, if they feel like it. Some Muslim women don't feel like following the rule and covering themselves, so they don't. Others are more influenced by their local culture and don't bother to cover their hair or anything either.

She likely wouldn' be wearing the dot on her forehead, as it's specifically Hindu tradition in India. It's fashion nowadays though, so I don't know for sure how it would have been in the 1800's.

Excellent job, btw. I love the way you did her eyes especially.

I believe they feel that a woman's vanity is centered on her hair, or some such. Lord knows that when I had mine shaved off (it had been more than half way down my back, and was now falling out) I found out just how vain I was about it. And became seriously annoyed with a stylist who hacked off 8" instead of only 4" when my hair grew back.
