Great job! People see a male because of their expectations for female character design (like the characteristics you stated). Β She clearly has a feminine figure and eyes. Β This is definitely a step towards more dynamic, interesting female characters!

I agree with your concept. I'm developing a game where the female characters wear similar body armor to the males, there's no "boob windows" on their armor for no reason. It makes no sense.

Yeah I agree, I too fall in the predictable characteristics too often. I should give it a try.

no no. it's definitely female... i don't understand people sometimes... its easy to tell male from female... even from far away... look at how the hips flare out... guys hips don't do that...
and you're right when it comes to females carrying a large gun that has to be at least 3 times their body weight... i always see those and think "WTF?!?!?!?" (^^,)

I'm liking the armor design a lot, female or male. Hoping for a melee style steampunk fighter.

the main problem is that it doesn't seem feminine enough to be female. too muscular a build, the armor that is. you also block the chest which is the most obvious place you would notice gender. the hands are pretty big too. you should try refining your pieces and think about what makes what you're drawing. It looks like you might be drawing with a mouse too. Good show! I've done some pieces with a mouse and they're horrible so it's good you're working with it. But something to think about is what you're comfortable with. If you did traditional art before and you really want to accelerate in art I'd suggest getting a tablet to draw with. I could be completely wrong and if I am I apologize. It's a good piece though. just missing a few things.

I don't think she needs a ponytail, I don't think the makeup on her eyes should be shown more than how you made them. I don't think she has to have her arm removed from where it is in order for her to "look" like a woman. Not all women have long hair, not all women look glamorous, ( why would you need to look glamourous when fighting?). Not all women need to show their breasts to show that they are women. It's just how society wants to portray them. I like this.

I was hoping it was female, and am glad I hoped right. I love the design. How it's not blatant breast-molds. It's very subtle and obscure. Awesome <3

Maybe you should give the design more feminine qualities without going with the sexy route.

If its counts for anything, I thought it was female from the thumbnail, waist was too thin for a male, and something about the pose of the feet.

A+
If you want to avoid confusion without sexualizing the costume, maybe make the helmet have a retractable visor to show some facial features?

I think it's great. It's pretty gender-neutral in my opinion, which is better than bikini-patterned armor, right?

quentinlars [2012-11-17 15:58:15 +0000 UTC]
soften the visor a bit to show the eyes more.. fantastic job though... I would also recommend putting a little more "dip in the hip" and maybe drop the sidearm a bit to reveal some more of her "upperbody" assuming she's not an "A" cup...
overall well done on making a more realistic female cop!

From the preview I thought she was male, but looking closer I realised that my initial 'he' was really a 'she', so don't worry. (: I do agree with you, it would be nice to see some designs that take practicality into consideration!

Cool design and you make some good points. With that much gear and armor I can see why folks might think she's a he but it supports your idea that a female character doesn't need the tell tale female characteristics to work. This character is obviously a soldier. Do we need the fact that she's a woman to hit us over the head to be a successful design? I don't think so. good stuff.

Well the Right Arm blocks view of the Chest, which would be the only real indication of if that was a Male or Female.
