Amazing work, the light play you have done in this is astounding. You've used the suttle difference in hue as well as shade to really create depth in this piece. Along with the intense stare of the individual, it really creates a somber piece.

Riviting in many ways but subject matter is great.

Your more recent paintings have a punchy style, but this one lingers with me.

I simply adore her expression. she is glaring at the 'camera', and it is just such an original portrait..I simply adore it and I wish I knew more about the person you painted..and why she is looking at me that way..please share..?

because "she" doesn't like painting from photographs. and is angry at the artist.

wow oh wow.
wonderful lighting & i agree with the point of this not being the average portrait.
the expression & the not-so beauty queen is impressive.

the lighting is great...it makes it all the more inense, along with her glare. i love that she isn't your average beauty queen.

What I most like about this is the way you painted the hair, the highlights coming out of the darkness. The neck seems really long and skinny. I'm not that fond of the lightning coming from right in front of her, I just miss highlights and shadows on the cheeks. I usually prefer a bit softer graduation on the shadows, but I've got to admit, the roughness suits the expression. The expression reminds me of the mornings I look on the mirror and just look so horrid I decide to scew it and just stare at the mirror. I'm not breve enough to paint that, though . I still have do a self portrait sometime, I guess.

I love honest portraits, and i love proud portraits- so this sits just right with me. Brilliant brush strokes, as well as the hair- great! I feel the red under your chin is a tad strong- but it does serve to balance the piece really well too.

She looks like she could totally kick my ass...but she needs a hug. I like the smudgy/dirty look to it. She's not clean cut, she's not beautiful, but it's beautifully done and REAL. Rock on man.

strong. super strong and intelligent portrait.
to re-iterate. the red in the neck and then shows up again in the eye. just one thing, in the eyes might want some dark dark green or purple. to knock them out. there's just so much dark color in the hair and background needs some in the face too. but since it's done, nevermind.
overall, i can see your decisions in this. well done.

Usally a big flat front plane like this is a big no no, but like my favorite painting teacher used to say, rules are made to be broken. The trick is to prove that you can compleatly ignore convention and still pull off an absolutly stunning piece. It does no good to break that convention if you are only proving why it exists in the first place. This is a wonderful example of how to break the rules. That flat plane serves only to make the figure look more blunt and defiant. It is in perfect harmony with the big strong brush strokes, and thick opaque paint. This work strikes me as a bold and fearless exercise in the pure joy of painting. Can you imagine the impression this would make from across a gallery. I think this is brilliant and if your teacher tells you to change it I beg you please to respectfuly ignore them.

by big flat front plane you mean just the face. and that is all. right in the middle.

well, yeah. i had tried the painting before, with another square of space above it, and didnt really like it. for this i just wanted it big, and thats all, and alone. so thank you.

Yep, right in the middle, that lovely green in the center that reads as one mass before it starts to break off in to the pink.
