Description Meet Buzz My contribution to a bit of whimsy thought up by *goldenSalamander ...a combination bee and rabbit. We decided to swap media just to add to the confusion and fun...hers is done in digital, mine traditional media. Ok. I did cheat after all, Sandi, I cleaned up the lines on the rabbit, palette and foreground a bit with a digi conte crayon I wanted it darker than I could get with my Artline pen, but didn't want to break out the big bad quill pen that I always drip ink out of...

Those are hummingbird eggs btw, small enough for a bun-bee to carry, fit neatly in a thimble and a good size for a fairy's Easter egg hunt

You can find Sandi's BunnBee here [link] Ain't she sweet?

Thanks for the challenge and the fun, Sandi It came at a good time, as my husband was busy updating my computer to Vista today...Traditional work couldn't have come at a better time!

Haha, that is pretty cool! Kudos to you for trying out traditional too. I think pencils, like digital paintings too, need a lot of layers. Just colour again and again over the same area with different colours, make 'em richer and work on the shading that way. I've used watercolour pencils before, and for the first layer I wet the coloured surface to get just a flat colour (with no annoying white paper grain lines, if you know what I mean) and then just build up on it with dry pencil.

MBoulad In reply to aneesah [2007-03-12 12:08:04 +0000 UTC]

Well, it was fun...but I think I overworked the paper, it wasn't picking up anymore colour by the time I finished with it. I wonder if a different type paper wouldn't work better...this was just basic sketch paper, and a bit slick.

Watercolour pencils are fun, tho, tried some out recently

Um. *Cough*...

Well.

That's what's known as a Levitating Blue Banded BunnBee, m'dear, they're quite common in Australia They levitate by means of an anti-gravity system that's been bred into the species to help them save energy in the hot Australian summer.

No. It's true!

Damn it, YES, I forgot to give it wings! I love it, that's funny

I now start our school day with clear knowledge of my fallibility, and will point this out to my son for him to giggle at with me Thanks for clueing me in to that!!

ArtbySandiJohnson [2007-03-11 15:19:25 +0000 UTC]

Oh, they're cute! Yours look more like a variety of bee than mine. Congratulations! Mine looks more like an animal created by a committee.......which sort of goes along with some of Australia's critters, now that I think about it. I love those antennae and luminous/liquid eyes. One version I thought of was small magical eggs the bunnybees painted, carried and hid under flowers like the Easter bunny and then waved a wand over to grow full sized for the children's Easter Egg Hunt. I also like that you kept them the Blue Banded Bee. I thought about that. This was fun and I don't think you cheated any more than I did. I found too, on the Allegra and Thistle that I couldn't get my pencils to get dark in the places I wanted the way I wanted and darkened them in Photoshop. (like my outline on Betty, only a small cheat )

MBoulad In reply to ArtbySandiJohnson [2007-03-12 12:19:10 +0000 UTC]

Aw, thanks Sandi

Hey, your idea about the magical eggs sounds like it would make an interesting Easter story, eh???

I still like yours better, the composition is nicer...but it WAS fun redoing the blue banded bee this way I really liked making a cartoon out of something I'd just painted realisticly...interesting experience, that.

I loved this, Sandi, thank you for the fun and inspiration...we have to do this again sometime!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to MBoulad [2007-03-12 12:33:26 +0000 UTC]

LOL I agree, this was fun. I don't know about the composition, though, LOL since I just made it up as I went along.......of course part of the decisions were made in the 2 earlier false starts, so that I started this one out with, oh, um I think I should go ahead and put some eggs up there........and luckily I could pick Betty up and move her to the left with the mouse when I realised there wasn't enough space for the egg, so..................but I just sort of scattered the flowers around the edges and she ended up bigger than I meant. Maybe, ever so often when we have time, hah! we can just decide to both do something on the same theme, but maybe in whatever medium we choose to see what we come up with......like a class assignment.

MBoulad In reply to ArtbySandiJohnson [2007-03-13 10:38:23 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, we should do this again...we'll see if inspiration strikes Though I've had a problem lately with inspiration striking so much that I'm getting bruises lol...too many ideas, not enough time to work on them all I've put a couple of things that were too intense (Artemis for instance) aside for later, as the smaller works are becoming more and more fun I guess that's not a bad thing!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to MBoulad [2007-03-13 17:19:41 +0000 UTC]

I've always had that inspiration problem, and right now...............: I want to do 2 more drawings to go with Nod, in my gallery, two ink line drawings of a boy playing baseball and his dog, to go with another drawing, and illustrate another poem, all to send with other prints to prospective book publishing art directors looking for work and I need to finish the 16 drawings for the author of Shahly's Quest, and that doesn't even get to what I WANT to do for me........and I'm starting a job, I guess. Lowe's had me come in for a drug test yesterday, so it looks like I'm getting hired for something, I just don't know if it's check out or floor work. ack! *falls over dead!* just kidding..........

You don't like it? Ahh well, I do at least Hehe, I know what you mean though, when I'm colouring with traditional media I'm always afraid to add the first or the next colour, and I never know how far I should go with some things, I'm always afraid of ruining it. Whereas digital media on the other hand, has handy dandy layers and Ctrl+z
