Description Hi all...

As usual I feel compelled to apologise for not being around more. I have good reasons but they always sound like excuses, so I hate to list them all

I painted this as a submission for Dante's Heart. Finished it early December I think it was. Digital version of a traditional piece I made awhile ago [link]
There's a bit of a description on that page if anyone is interested

Well. I best get back to work

to you all, hope you're all well!

Wow, what a difference! Even though the watercolour version is still beautiful, the amount of details you can put into your digital pieces just amazes me. Stunning work as usual!

Thanks Michelle Yeah, I look at the traditional version of this, and while I like it, I can tell my heart just isn't in it like in a digital version. I feel like I start a traditional painting discouraged by the limitations If I put more effort and planning into it like a strictly traditional artist, they would come out better, but I just don't feel that inspiration anymore. Which is kind of sad.

I wonder what your thoughts are on comparing the two, now that you've started working in both media I loved watching you pick up digital, you took to it so naturally! I get the impression that you switch between the two media more easily than I can.

MichelleWalker In reply to MBoulad [2008-02-03 20:47:37 +0000 UTC]

Thanks hon! Well, pencils were the only way I knew how to colour before, but now that I've tried digital, I have to say I enjoy them both equally. And even though it's been about 7 months since I got my tablet, I can't imagine NOT having one now! I agree - there are certain limitations in working with pencils - for me that's gotta be things like rain or water etc. And as for digital, well, it can be quite sore on the eyes! But for me, there's always something more personal about a traditional picture - it's harder to undo mistakes, and you've got to rely on your artistic eye more (I tend to use the dropper tool to get a colour right when using digital!) Plus, I find it really relaxing and you can take a sketchbook and pencils anywhere. Sorry to ramble on!

No, don't be sorry! I loved that, I'm so curious to see other people's opinions comparing the two Especially you, dear, since you recently took up digital...because it's made such a big difference to me, I wonder if it's just a personal preference or others share the same experience.

This is a wonderful, furthur development of your eariler watercolor. The color is so much richer and the objects so much more solid and better built up. It feels very 3D with a great since of depth back into it. You've moved her just a hair inward and I think that works much better. Really nice.

MBoulad In reply to ArtbySandiJohnson [2008-02-02 22:59:59 +0000 UTC]

Thanks Sandi! It still has some of the shortcomings of the traditional version, composition isn't the best, but it was really nice playing with the underwater elements.

I like it, I didn't really look for 'things that could have been done better'. I just enjoyed it.

Love your work on the coral; the colours and slightly out-of-focus look are perfect. Can't help thinking, though, that the caption for this painting should be "Stand back! I've got a putterfish and I'm not afraid to use it!"

FlareAndIcicle [2008-01-27 11:40:01 +0000 UTC]

Very gorgeous image, this! I have to say I love this one more than the traditional one... I think mainly cause the colours are somewhat brighter here, as well as smoother, making the pic come more together.... And those pufferfish (sp?) are really cute! I 'specially like the littlest one and the mermaid's hair is just amazing!

MBoulad In reply to FlareAndIcicle [2008-01-29 16:57:00 +0000 UTC]

Oh, yeah...I agree. The traditional one was nice to work on, but digital is so much more fun for me! You can do so much more with it
I think this was just my excuse to paint pufferfish They're faces crack me up, so sweet and funny.
