Description I've wanted to try out some new brushes in Painter...this is an experiment with the thick wet oil brush (for the fish and plants) and watercolour and sponges for the water surface. I found the oil brush pretty challenging to handle, and because it takes continuous pressure when blending it's extremely tiring on your hand. But I like the effect you can get with it...though it's a bit tricky in the blending (hard to figure out how/why it's picking up colours as it blends).

I kept jumping up to peer at the underside of our gold fish to see what they look like from below while I worked on this Never paid much attention to them from that angle before this

About 10 hours, Painter and wacom tablet.

Thanks so much for the fav I do wish I'd put a bit more time into the composition of this one, tho... it started as a quick excercise...maybe I'll rework it at some stage

You're sweet (and a much better artist than me so your comments always make me really happy and kinda stunned! Thanks! )

Drowning? Yeah, and the goldfish are circling in...feeding frenzy! Argh!

They remind me of sharks from this angle

Thank you...it was pretty cool trying to paint from a live fishie, but the fins I painted aren't anywhere near as pretty as on the real thing

Azerane [2007-05-23 15:52:42 +0000 UTC]

I really adore their fins, they look gorgeous being transparent like that... so nicely done.

I think though, that my favourite part would have to be the plants, reaching, curling and twisting up toward the surface, it's just beautiful.

THank you That's nice, I'm happy you liked the plants I didn't have any reference for those, so it was just working from imagination, trying to figure out how the light/colours would change as they trail up towards the surface. It was very enjoyable working on that part!

MBoulad In reply to Dreamgirll [2007-05-24 05:45:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, it's easier taking care of a painting than aquarium

Honestly we just have a fish bowl with one lonely goldfish in it. We've had him over 4 years though and he's going strong Fish bowls are pretty easy to take care of!

Its beautiful. The oils give it a nice smooth look which really helps the idea of them being in water. Just gorgous.

I tried drawing something...it was a sad scene to watch. >.<

Have you done more fashion illustrations? I bet you'd enjoy that, since you design your own clothes...if you love it it will come easier

Clouded-Mind In reply to MBoulad [2007-05-25 00:18:47 +0000 UTC]

No. >.< To both comments. I haven't been in that much of a creative mood since classes have drained it from it.

More recently though I have thought about doing some more painting, like what I did with my table top five years ago. You can see a little intense of it in my icon. Not the best but it was fun.

Nicely done! The fish and plants actually look like they've been done traditionally (wouldn't it be cool if we could do impasto effects using CG too??)
You should be really proud of this piece

MBoulad In reply to izy17 [2007-05-24 05:49:47 +0000 UTC]

Hey! you *can* do impasto effects with CG There's a selection of impasto brushes in Painter, but I haven't gotten a handle on them yet...and though it doesn't really show in this smaller version, the oil brush I used is impasto (I think I blended it so much it doesn't show well here!)

Thanks for your comment

Looks awesome. The angle makes it all.

I was wondering why you had to jump up to view the underside of the fish? How high up do they live?

And I guess you could try adjusting the brush settings yourself, changing it to your liking. If the strain's too much. I've never been very brave is messing around with those stuff, but hey, the settings are changeable for a reason, eh?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MBoulad In reply to aneesah [2007-05-24 05:56:36 +0000 UTC]

Thank ye, darlin'

It's not that the fish live up high, it's that I'm short. I can barely see over the kitchen counter, the stepping stool is very helpful

I don't know if there's anyway to adjust the brush to avoid the hand strain prob...everytime you touch the pen down the selected colour flows for awhile, to blend in the other colours you have to continue to hold down until it starts picking them up. I can't think of any other way to do it

MBoulad In reply to ArtbySandiJohnson [2007-05-24 05:58:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, I just started out playing with the sponge and watercolour and came up with something that looked to me like the water surface when you're swimming up The rest came from there....actually the composition is a bit off, especially the fish...but it was a nice experiment!

ArtbySandiJohnson In reply to MBoulad [2007-05-24 12:49:29 +0000 UTC]

Experimenting is fun and it loosens up the creativity. Did you do your banner for childrensiullustrator yet? I've popped in to look for it from time to time....I think I'll recognize your art without your name, so I'm testing myself to see if I can.

I've finally given up trying to make one from an old painting, I keep getting frustrated with all the resizing and stuff... I'm making one right now I won't put my name on it, just for fun, we'll see if you can tell which it is

LOL a challenge! I hope I'm up to it. I took a slice from one of mine, but had trouble resizing it too, for some reason.
