Description In the old library, secret book was hidden…it was powerful book of old alchemical symbols, carefully written down to be kept from time and oblivion. Skull was set to guard the book, and a candle to give light to eyes that can read and understand strange signs.
One sad day, some evil hand burned the library down…everyone thought all is lost, all disappeared in the rage of fire…and it was so, only, hands of young alchemists apprentice saved the secret book in the last moment...
He was in the library when fire started and risking his own life, he opened the hiding place and removed the book. Both barely escape fire.
A bit burned on the edges, but still whole, book was secretly removed from the library through old secret hallways. Once out, it was carried together with the skull and candle, to be given to hands of old alchemist, who decided book must be secured better.
-But what to do?-asked alchemist himself-How to hide it better?-
And then, idea came to him…it would be easier to hide the book if it was smaller.
-And what is small, may easily pass unnoticed by those who dream of height and might-he chuckled for himself.
So, through special process, he made the book small and skull and candle to go with it. And hidden them all, to be seen only by chosen eyes, through centuries to come.

How do you like the introduction story for this item/s?
It's kinda written in last moment, so forgive any possible mistakes and/or shortness.
You can see video of this book (pages better shown) here:
[link]
It took me some time to make this book…it's size is 2 cm x 2.5 cm and it has 34 pages (plus endpapers, which makes it 36), with some alchemical symbol/sigil on every page and it's meaning/name on English, above it. Pages are made of paper dyed in “Earl Grey” tea, to give them special coloration and all were carefully made “dirty” so book would looked used. Book is bound in so called “saddle stitch” manner.
Covers gave hard time, as real leather and it had to be carefully prepared and after all, to be given the same look of age and usage as inner book have…numerous use of alcohol, mineral oil, turpentine and acrylics to accomplish this, but I'm pretty satisfied with result. After that, I did gilding.
Finally, book was burned a bit (using ember, rather than open fire and even like that it had to be done very, very carefully, avoiding any real damage).
When book was finished, it was skull's turn. It's polymer clay...no long explanations, just: lots of needles used and few hours. It's just around 1 cm in height and about 1.5 cm long.
On the end, I used old yellow candle and dripped wax carefully into a small cardboard mold I made (by the way, wick is there all the way…it’s real candle, can burn all the way, only it’s 1.5cm in height).
And there it is…book, skull and candle.
It is for sale, if anyone's interested, but price is not small, mind you, as this took me plenty of time and effort and also, cause it will stay unique…only this one, at least by me, is made and it will stay that way. I can't say the same for skull or candle, as I kinda like making those, but those never end up the same anyway
This all goes together, all three objects. Don't ask me to sell it separately. If interested in just skull or candle, contact me, can make you another ones.
Ok, this is very long, so I'll cut it…shortly: I hope you like it

UPDT: This book has been given to a friend, so no longer available for sale Again, if anyone desires something in the similar style, you know where to find me

As for the credibility, this is nothing more than a prop book in a way, but the symbols are true (take any chart of alchemy symbols and feel free to check). Some of them repeat in different form, but that's that. Also, some can be discuses, due the variations...still all true. Of course, I can also provide one with symbols chosen by customer, so you could provide your own if you would like that.

You can pay with cash, through Western Union or MoneyGram, whichever you would prefer. As for the price and all, well, I'm sending you a mail, but if it doesn't come in the next 24h, do contact me through the notes here and I'll give you all the answers and details.

Glad you like it, btw

And I bound it, just like regular book, when it comes to paper. It's saddle stitched, which mean I sew the pages
As for covers, I love doing such things in miniature ^^

If you decide, there's a tut for a non-sewn type of book in my gallery, but there's also few other in the dA tutorials that are very useful. Best

That is actually really cool! i mean you missed the point of what real alchemy is, (just science and the symbols are a notetaking tecnique that were used before modern day chemistry) but its still a really cool piece of art!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Maylar In reply to cos1163 [2010-06-26 00:57:52 +0000 UTC]

Thanks ^^
Yeah, I know what for alchemical symbols are used and this is not a real book of alchemy...it was never really meant to be a representation of the alchemy as science. I was aiming for a certain "feel" that would remind viewer on alchemy in general, you know
Glad you like it

You should probably take bit better care with photographing them, as current photos definitely doesn't do them justice, but from what I've seen, they are incredible

This is so intriguing and beautiful! I love how the three pieces work together and tell a story. The symbols in the book are beautiful, too! That round snake is gorgeous!
And I love that you made it really ancient-looking, with the singed edge and everything. It's fantastic.

I really do like your work, it's just difficult to look at with your nails there...I'm sorry ;

Maylar In reply to Airavel [2009-12-11 00:54:38 +0000 UTC]

As I said, people has different tastes...due some health issues, my nails are very fragile,so every cutting result with weeks of very painful chipping and breaking...so I tend to keep them like this, whenever I can. Besides, when someone works with miniature things, it's actually very helpful
Don't let prejudice keep you from enjoying someone's art

Airavel In reply to Maylar [2009-12-11 02:11:21 +0000 UTC]

I'm not prejudice, it's just what my stomach doesn't like XD
you should try using a nail strengthener on your cuticles to make your nails grow in stronger and put a solid drying nail polish on them, my mom has extremely brittle nails and that helps a little
