This actually is not a posed photo. . . Kermit was playing for a singer named Nayo Jones, who often sings as his opening act when Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers play on the road. It was Nayo who had first told me that she, Kermit and the band would soon play in Baltimore. Lady Angel was watching Nayo sing. I'll post a photo of Nayo later. . .
Please see this Journal for context: New OrleansI had decided before I left Baltimore for New Orleans that this time I was going to get out of the French Quarter and have a "genuine" New Orleans experience. Naturally, in my mind, that experience was going to involve jazz, and "real food." The jazz part is self-explanatory, but when I say "real food" I mean just regular food that non-tourists might eat while in their city. Well, my first night in New Orleans gave me all that I bargained for. . .
Patrick, my best friend at work, knows all of the funkiest spots in seemingly every city east of the Mississippi River. (Patrick was once a city-to-city book salesman, and he has the best travel stories of anyone I know) He had recommended a place called The Mother-in-Law Lounge. So the day before I left Baltimore I called there to ask if they'd have any live music on the nights that I'd be in town. As it turned out, I was speaking with the owner - Kermit Ruffins.
