The stoic leader of the valiant Autobots was not always the calm, paternal commander he is today. I envision his Machine Wars toy as representing his younger, more inexperienced days, when he still had some harsh lessons waiting to be pounded into him.

Looking at this, I have a feeling he and Hot Rod would have much in common. Hot Rod would become-in time as measured and paced as Optimus was destined to be.

Yeah, that's definitely what I was going for. Though Hot Rod is an interesting case himself, since he didn't actually grow into his Primehood; he just got a maturity infusion from the Matrix, and then he seemed to go right back to his previous self when Optimus reclaimed it. I don't know if that happened to Optimus too; I always got the impression that he was just safeguarding the Matrix without much effect, like Ultra Magnus did. I like to think that, indeed, Optimus had to earn his maturity the hard way...

Heh, yeah, that's exactly why I decided that that toy is a younger version of him. For some reason it makes me think of the way the young Optimus looked in the old Marvel comic series, seen in this drawing . Even though it really doesn't look much like the Machine Wars toy at all, and besides which his robot mode in that comic looked exactly like his modern one. But still...
