Description There are over 1,500 shrines in Kyoto alone. Most Shrines have a pair of stone guardian dogs called Komainu at the entrance near the torii (gateway). Komainu is an imaginary creature that looks like a lion or a dog. It is said that they protect Gods in shrines from evil. This is a scene of a Komainu at one of the most famous shrines in Japan, Yasaka Shrine in Kyoto.

I painted this in April, 2013.

Thank you so much for your comment!  BTW, I like your handle name.  It's cute!  As I'm Japanese, I understand what it means!

Thank you! It's one of my favorite songs by Asian Kung-Fu Generation. I like the idea of a fish who wishes he could fly

Wow, the detail in the stone statue really surprised me. I didn't think it was a painting at all!! Great job, it looks fantastic!

I really like this one Masa, once again you've combined so many different elements into one view. The beautifully painted Komainu amid all of the tight perspective lines, the foliage in the background, but I especially like that highlighting on the red post near the top of it. I am curious what is the size of this piece?

Thank you so much for your kind comment, Warren. The vermilion post (column)is a part of torii ([link] ). I used a bit wax on that part to express a round shape of the column. About your question, I usually use a sheet of Arches 9"x12" cold press (140lb) for my artwork.

You are welcome. It's interesting for me to see this because I do not have any culture to really draw on at all. I am descended from English/Scottish on one side and Czech on the other. For me going back is literally remembering my grandparents and that's it.

I was trying to gauge the size in which you work and now I can clearly see it thanks.
