Description It was a cold, crisp morning at the end of January. I visited one of the most famous spots in Kyoto called San-nei-zaka. It is a side street with stone steps and beautiful traditional buildings (Machiya) standing on both sides of the steps. During high season, thousands of tourists visit this area all day long, but at that time, no one was around, but myself. There was just a peaceful silence. I stood at the top of the hill, looking down at the charming scene for a very long time. And I thought I really wanted to paint this scenery. As it was a freezing cold day (it snowed sometimes), the sky was so dull. I was uncertain which colour I should use on the sky part and I decided to paint as little colour as possible. If you feel the sky looks featureless, my mission is partly completed!

It was a big challenge for me to work on this. I used a realistic painting technique for this. Drawing was the hardest part-- it took about 2 weeks because I didn't use a scale anywhere in this painting. I never thought that drawing straight lines needed such a big effort!

I painted this in March, 2012

Yup! I picked it because I was gazing at the evening sky on my roof one day, and I thought that the darkening violet and indigo colors were just as beautiful, if not moreso, as the flaming orange and crimson of the sky during sunset, hence the name Murasaki Sora 紫空 (though I usually write it out in hiragana そら).
I most certainly will let you know! Thank you so much

Such a beautiful piece! I love the colors. Straight lines are so hard, but you did a great job with them

I am not as good a watercolourist as you, but still Irecognize that drawing is the hardest (and slowest) part. Like the work!!!

Thank you very much, Jettiehie. Yes, drawing is the most difficult part and when you can get through the part in success, you've almost finished on your artwork!

I really like it, Masa....It has a certain delicacy that makes it so appealing...and you did get the perspectives right. I can see this may have taken a long time to do. Very beautiful work, my friend.
