Such perfect details for the Spider-Woman. I remember watching the animated series on television, you really captured her masked personality.

How do you smooth your sculpey mark? I usually just rub with wet metal or something, but it doesnt work to well on the small stuff. Do you use turpinoid or anything like that?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MarkNewman In reply to KateMcBlair [2010-08-27 00:09:14 +0000 UTC]

Yes, I use turpenoid and a soft bristle brush.
After baking the sculpt I often use a very fine steel wool
to lightly sand the areas I want very smooth.

KateMcBlair In reply to MarkNewman [2010-08-27 15:15:38 +0000 UTC]

Cool. I have to try that. I dont know why, but i was never sure if they say to use turpeniod or alcohol!
Never tried steel wool, I will have to give it a shot on my next one

Thanks for the info

MarkNewman In reply to KateMcBlair [2010-08-29 14:46:02 +0000 UTC]

Either one works. The turpenoid dissolves the material more aggressively while the rubbing alcohol mush less aggressive but tends too dry out the surface. Some people also use lighter fluid.

Gahhhh, watching the earlier pics, I was thinking "Ok, he must have done the face, baked it, then the mask, then the hair, baking it gradually each time, there is no way you can do this in one go". But you just threw my theory out of the window !

I know you're hella skilled and have been doing this for a long time Mark, but still it just keeps me in awe at how precise you can be on such a small scale. And how there's that ability in your work to be able to pull off things I only can imagine being able to do on 2D formats.

Two different formats I understand but still. You have some sensational work, especially in these WIP shots. Thanks for sharing these.

What I find outstanding is the technique you use on hair design. I have yet to find a book or online class that even reaches your level of meticulous detail. Have you ever taught classes?

Awesome! I am so glad you showed these! I was admiring her face from the last few you showed!
It is rare that the faces are as beautiful as the body in some sculpts, but you always make beautiful faces!
