Here is One half of my 'Circle of Best Friends'.UPDATE [26/8] : I thought she would look more alive in this semi-sepia version.

+0.5 Mechanical Pencil
+9B graphite pencil
+Paper Stumps
+A little bit of Charcoal
Time: ~ 30 - 40 hours
I was inspired to draw this after seeing =IsabelChiang 's portrait of her friend Dina

you are welcome-is the black background for real, and if so how did you get this level of black? same goes for the contrast and black areas in the face. i really love this portrait, you have a beautiful style.....

The blackness in this portrait is charcoal which makes the drawing look a bit odd in real life.
I'm not using charcoal anymore, because of the mess it makes. to create the real blackness - you gotta draw in small, small cirles all over. And you can't cheat because it will show. *sigh* Dark areas is a pain!

amazing!! i just started to do portraits after what seems a very long time..and i can only dream to be as good as u!! how do u do it? any tips?

I've got many tips... so many I can't even remember them all.
So, I'll just post those that's floating close nearby...
1. Try to find a smooth paper - not too rough(I hate that)
2. Use paperstumps ( I've recently started pre-drawing my pieces with a blackened paperstump)
3. Draw in small circles (The key is to kinda hide the pencil line)
4. Don't be afraid to draw very dark areas.
5. Soft areas are best drawn with a used paperstump (I only use one... over and over and over...)
6. Find a high-res reference picture - You'll see the details more clearly and will be therefore able to draw them. ^^

And you're kinda right about her name - it sounds very much like an icelandic name. Her father's name is 'Ulf' and 'dotter' means daughter - so basically it means that she's the daughter of Ulf.
And she's from Sweden, just like me.

There is something about them.. like I said,
it seems you spend equal time on trying
to let us emotionally "touch" the subjects
and of course, achieving a pleasant finish/realistic rendering...
This is what art should be, to me,
not a mere attempt at showing off skills or technique
but using them as a mean to portray something more.
All great artists have an eye for detail,
the need to show some things like they see them,
the technique is secondary to them.
The greatest artists
turn this into an obsession...
the obsession for some particular content,
someone's personality,
some physical type that holds special meaning;
some of them have several of these obsessions,
the ones who become legends
often have one.
