Description I got a new set of art pens recently, and I've been dying for an excuse just to break lose and use them. This turned out from it. Obviously Stephanie went front and center here, as I've been a Spoiler fan for a while, and I was very thrilled when she took over the mantle.

And before anyone asks why I didn't draw Batwoman on there? She was never a "Batgirl". Much like Terry McGinnis did (or will?) she went right to the big leagues. She gets her own picture when the time comes.

Hope you like.

I just read a Dan Didio interview on his take on the retcon of Cassandra & Stephanie. In it, he bluntly states how small the fanbase is for those two heroines, since the DC offices only received about 6 or so waffles. Although he did remark that the ex-Batgirls would return, but only when the right story comes.

But the way this so-called "New 52" is playing out, I might just be tempted to dunk waffle mix on the ol' codger at the next convention he's in. He just better be on the lookout for a guy... with hair!

Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe aka Misfit. She was the fifth girl to assume the mantle and the one to last the shortest amount of time.

Charlotte Gage-Radcliffe AKA, Misfit. She was Batgirl for a really short amount of time, before being talked out of it by Barbara. [link]

Love Misfit's expression, & find it a nice (& interesting) touch that Helena has her back to us, the viewer. Really beautiful.

Very nice! I particularly like how you have Misfit just poking her head out in the background totally behaving like Misfit, and Helena with her back turned to us. ^_^

After so many years of being kicked around by DC, I was glad that Stephanie finally got her chance to shine. The fact that she's fully-sanctioned by Babs herself only makes it better.

Never did like Cassie, though. Even though my knowledge of Batgirl stemmed from B:TAS and "the film that shall not be named" back then, there was just something about Cassie that didn't fit the role.

Awsome piece!

The way i see Batgirl:

Cassandra: Too dark. Betty: Too light. Barbara and Stephanie: Just right!

My nr:1 Batgirl will always be Barbara Gordon, but Stephanie is definately a close 2nd.

Cassandra Cain, really, i just never understood the need for Batgirl to be this dark and spooky. When i saw Stephanie in her new Batgirl costume, i was so happy to see DC going back to the more iconic look of Batgirl with the cowl and the exposed hair. If you look at the Batgirl legacy, the evolution from Barbara to Cassandra didn't make much sense, because Cassandra never really looked like Batgirl at all, but more like some sort of Halloween Bat-scarecrow or a Bat-ghoul. Then going from Babs to Steph, Stephanie really looks like a Batgirl who has evolved yet pays more then enough tribute to Barbara's costume to see that this is a true new Batgirl.

All of them have been Batgirl at some point? Wow, it must be the most used title in comics, followed by Spiderwoman.

So even though there's been six Batgirls... Only three of them have been official. If I had to pick the most used identity in comics, it would be Robin's. with five official boy/girl wonders. Sure there's six Batgirls here, but only three of them were canonically official.

The first one was Bette Kane (the blonde in red) called then "Bat-Girl". She was made in the early 60's along with "Batwoman" mainly as a deterrent to prove that Batman and Robin wasn't gay. (There was a big controversy about it in the late 50's.) But she was kinda... Well... Lame, and she quickly got forgotten and retconned out of continuity in the 80s. Years later, a character named "Flamebird" showed up named Bette Kane, which was a modernized version of her, but as far as continuity goes, she was never Batgirl.

The second is Barbara Gordon, I think everyone knows who she is.

The next one was Helena Bertinelli, aka The Huntress (the one with her back turned) she donned the mask briefly during a story arc called "No Man's Land" where Batman went missing. As mentioned a few posts above, it ended badly and didn't last too long. Huntress isn't what one would call a team player, and it wasn't looked too fondly upon by the other members of the Bat-Family... Especially Barbara. (Which is ironic, considering their later relationship with the Birds of Prey.)

The next Batgirl would be Cassandra Cain, who would end up being around for quite a bit of time, from like 2000 to just last year. She would probably still be around, but there was a bit of editorial dicking around that you could get some Cassandra Cain fans whipped into a frenzy by just mentioning it. Basically she got boned over and her character was almost ruined. It's a long story.

The following Batgirl was only Batgirl for an issue or two, was Charlotte Gage-Radcliff aka Misfit. She took the role on her own, but was talked out of it by Barbara, pointing out how utterly dangerous it was. Misfit still hung around though, but not as Batgirl.

And the last and current one is Stephanie Brown, formerly known as Spoiler and the fourth Robin. She's got a very long and interesting story and was always a favorite of mine. She finally got to get up to bat with being the latest Batgirl.

Post-Crisis Batman during Morrison's run stated that Kathy and Bette (whether it's pronounced betty or bet) did exist but had short stents as Kate is called the new Batwoman by peguin alluding to Kathy then Bette herself appears a couple times it's just unknown if Batgirl is Flamebird now. So there's four that count.

Wait, is that Huntress in the background far right? She was never a Batgirl IIRC...

Great pic.

Fantastic artwork and great job with the colours.
