Description Creature illustration for a mobile game. This was a dream job. It paid well, and I had loads of creative freedom with interpreting the client's monsterly wishes. Unfortunately, thus far it has turned out to be too good to be true, as I haven't seen hide nor hair of him since doing this one piece. Sadly.

Wow, so I'm guessing they took this image? Isn't there ways to prevent that? You should of watermarked the fuck out of it until you got paid. You said it paid well but was that the figure or did you get paid or what? I'm really curious and it annoys the fuck out of me when people take advantage of insanely talented artist.

It's fine! I was indeed paid for this piece. The sad part was that no other pieces were ever commissioned of me.

Yeah, I'm not sure what happened with them. Luckily, a few new projects have stepped in to fill the void.
Thanks, man!

Aw, that's too bad! It's a really cool creature though, and I guess having the "perfect client" even once is something to envy. : p

I especially like the hands on this one, for some reason! I think it's partially that fusion of the middle two fingers, an effect that always recalls the "Alien' for me. This guy has an intriguingly fetal appearance, but I definitely get the impression he can fend for himself! Are those blisters additional spores, or flotation bladders, or...? I'm guessing they're gestation sacs, from the implication of little baleful eyes peeking out at us....

Also, yay for tripartiris! XD

Thanks, Scott! I've been in contact with the guy a couple times since then, and it's always that he's busy with other projects with the possibility of some more work for me "soon." So far that hasn't panned out, and perhaps his company doesn't even exist anymore. You know how mobile game companies can be. Still, it'd be awesome to work for him again.

Bugger! Really cool creature in any case! I love the crazy stare and expression of the whole thing. The slightly textured brushes (or brush edges) give it a nice grainy sort of surface, and the variations of teeth location, direction, and size is really neat. Well done!

M0AI In reply to Cloister [2013-03-08 18:47:29 +0000 UTC]

Thanks much, Cloister! Yeah, that grainy brush is my go-to general purpose rendering brush these days.

Cloister In reply to M0AI [2013-03-09 14:52:20 +0000 UTC]

Photoshop or Painter?
I'd like to increase my use of textured/grainy brushes, but I have a hard time finding a satisfying combination of blending, and grainy qualities. I enjoy adding some grainy/textured brushstrokes upon the already painted areas, but when I use them to paint with, for general purpose, I'm not really comfortable with them... probably since the pretty grainy edges aren't soft at all, and won't blend as nicely with the rest (as a semi-soft round brush will). I'm talking Photoshop now.

M0AI In reply to Cloister [2013-03-09 20:44:56 +0000 UTC]

I'm an exclusive photoshopper. My main brush that I was talking about is just a standard photoshop hard round with a few dozen small "bites" taken out of it with a standard hard round eraser, so it looks kind of like a round slice of swiss cheese or a cross section of a round sponge. Angle jitter's at max and I can increase or decrease the sense of grain with brush spacing. At wider spacing and lower opacity it should blend fairly well.
