Description This image is an illustration of a character called Rizena, from my fantasy series called 'The Thema'. This image depicts Rizena at the edge of a fissure on a different planet, she is marked with the tattoo of duty.

Rizena is a complex character, immortal; used to pain and loss as a result. She actively seeks a new life, although she is at the height of status and is practically a goddess - but she detests this. With an physically mark of duty on her face, she can't hide, change or disguise duty. Nor the difference of status or the colossal void that exists between her and most people.

First of all i like the idea!

My constructive crit would be the following.

1. Go back to B&W, as You seam to have light comming from strange places, i understand the light is comming from the setting/rising sun in the background and you've mad it quite bright. IN this situation there would be a light aura around the edges of the hair showing that the light was hitting it from behind.

Try studying some portraits of people with soft light from above. Her nose should be shadowing her top lip more and lighting the top of her nostril more.

Also be aware that even tatoo's on skin reflect light, as you've done the tatoo in a dark color and not added the normal light comming from her cheak it makes it look like the tatoo is just painted over the photo and not an actual part of her skin.

2. The foreground should be darker, im not sure what you were going for when you have used a large "fog like" brush over her. One thing i have had to drill into my brain recently and the concept it's self is quite simple but hard to apply is that there is no Dark - normal -light.. color or lighting on a form, there is only Absense of light and Light. The shades inbetween are simply less or more light on a surface. Remember Shadows are more saturated and highlights are less saturated under most circumstances.

Adding the fog brush confuses the eye and makes her body look buddy and distant as you would expect close-up would be more detailed and darker, further away would be less detailed and lighter.

If the light source is comming from the top right as insinuated in the picture then hearly her entire left shoulder would be in shadow also as you have made the hair on that side very dark in comparison suggesting a lack of light from that direction.

3. The hair. Judging from the way it all flows to the right i assume there is a cross wind. In this case the hair on the right hand side would flow more evenly from the scalp, as hair is very light ( Weight ) as you know it would not sit flush with the girls forehead at the base and then stream out to the right in the wind. There needs to be more of a flow from the scalp to the right as the hair is blown that way.

Other than that i'ts a great image, the background is great and so is the face though lacking some detail and lighting + shadow.

Hope this helps e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/sโ€ฆ " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Smile)"/> keep up the good work!

Thanks for taking time out to critique this piece! There are several useful points for me to bare in mind when I re-edit this piece. I don't want to bore you going point for point, but the original idea I had for the lighting was multiple suns. As the image progressed however through different renditions I retained some elements that don't quite match the background. I agree I need to change the lighting. The 'tattoo' or a slightly raised plaque around her eye is a dominate feature if the character but yeah it does like kinda weird when you point it out
Yeah I need to rethink the hair!

Again thanks for your comments, really appreciate it!

Composition can be improved, the direction of the hair is distracting me from the focus of interest (the face) also, the face itself still needs some work (watch those lips)
And those fancy light effects are doing more harm than good to the picture. Using that effect you are destroying your values, the overall blue color doesnt help either.
Finally, consider replacing your signature, it is distracting too.

When you do an illustration, you need to plan where the eyes of the observer will go, that is one of the first things you need to have in mind.

My advice:
-turn the picture to grayscale and study the values, you need to get rid of that boring midtones and make everything shadow and light.
-do more hair studies, it is a tricky thing to paint
-try to integrate more the photo elements of the background.

I still think this one have potential, the piece just need more work on it.

A very accurate critique! I think it's important for everyone to have someone check on their blind spots with their critical eye.

wow thank you for taking time out to critique this piece! It really makes me want to improve it asap! Very honest and constructive. The focus on the image was the left eye (for obvious reasons) and i used the hair to kind of make the focus much more obvious. I can paint hair, its just at this scale my photoshop has trouble rendering it in realtime; although this is no excuse for the lack of quality!

EduardoGaray In reply to LukeFielding [2012-10-22 23:35:13 +0000 UTC]

i see, well to be honest, i think the most important problem in this one is (as i already commented) that light effect you used over all the picture.
By throwing random light sources all over the place the viewer cant focus on anything and the picture ends looking chaotic.
Also my PC has problems to manage photoshop at higher resolutions too, try working on a smaller resolution.
Anyway, iยดm glad to read that you are motivated, work hard mate!

Yeah the lighting was a result of recycling ideas from different renditions of the artwork. I will look at some tutorials of digitally painting hair to improve, I find painting hair digitally very tricky like you said and sometimes I just frustrated because I have been told what you can do on paper you can do on photoshop... Meh I don't think so!
Yeah I'm going to try and take this character to a whole new level
