Yay! Considering this was mostly cut, adjust size, paste, it sure took me a long time to do it. @_@ Inspired by y2jenn's piece, this is a look at my most prolific character, as I've drawn her over the past seven years. I've actually had her since '98, but the pic under '99 is the first one I ever drew of her.

Jade is a phoenix (hence the full name Jade Phoenix -- I thought I was being clever ), and that's what's with the flame motife.

1999 - Brand new at the time, Jade was my alter ego on a Ranma 1/2 ML I was a part of, thus her age mirrored mine (I was 19 then). She was genki, and was known for her long legs and her love of shiny things. Mostly spoons, as I recall. I had just started drawing anime style regularly the year before. It's funny to look back and think that I thought I was a good artist then.

2000 - Between '99 adn '00, my artistic ability improved by leaps and bounds. Jade, who used to wear the same outfit in every picture I drew her in, somehow sprouted a wardrobe. One of the first pictures I drew showing this was one of her in winter, getting ready to throw a snowball at her then-boyfriend, Jeff. Her bangs changed dramatically in the course of one year. You're not even seeing all the stages they went through.

2001 - Jade became a more subdued character, and I tried to show that here. Her eyes got less "cute" and more "pretty". Earlier in the year I had traced (I'm not ashamed to admit that I learned how to draw by tracing) a picture of Naga the White Serpent (Slayers movies and OVAs), reduced the chest size, and dressed her differently than I usually drew Jade (and certainly differently than Naga dresses @_@). I tried to use what I'd learned from that style in this picture. It's really not the best one from that year, but I hadn't even copied the pose, so I was proud of it.

2002 - Her genkiness returns. I decided I needed to get better at poses, so I started copying them again. This one's off the cover of How to Draw Manga: Bodies & Anatomy. I thought it fit her personality well enough to use.

2003 - Emiko and I began discussing Green Eyes, and I wanted to redevelope Jade to make a good heroine. She wasn't more subdued here as she may appear, but as someone once told me, "It's a very good picture, overall. Well done and high quality. But it's not Jade." Jade started wearing her hair in different styles this year.

2004 - The Green Eyes designs had finally gone through. Emi and I decided that shoujo manga worked best with high school students, so Jade stopped being my age and started being 15. This picture was modeled off of Miaka (Fushigi Yuugi).

2005 - And finally, current. This is the first picture on the first page of the first installment of Green Eyes, hence the black and white. I looked for my GE notebook for literally hours today, just so I could use this shot for all you nice people. ^_^ Not modeled after anything, this is how Jade is going to be looking for a while. But now you know why she looks older in some of my pics of her, and younger in others.
