Description ... time for another tutorial, since people asked how I shade using the Gradient tool, this generally explains it! This is what I learned when I worked as colorist and a few tricks also when I was in that storyboard-course... You can shade everything using that tool, a rock is just an example.
And it is really fast to work with it... I painted that rock in around 12 minutes... or less. Please refer to this Tutorial (or to my DA URL) if you use this technique, Thanks!

That's a great tutorial! I used it on this drawing [link]
I hope you don't mind that I "copied" the form of your stone, I just liked it looks so I kinda tried to make it look like yours. Tell me if you do mind and I'll change it

Thank you!
I am glad to see it's helpful also no problem about the similar look, so no need to change anything there
and that's some nice work on that gerbil fur and wing too!

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THIS TUTORiAL! If you happen to have the time, please make a tutorial regarding how to make lands like cliffs and stuff like that in the fast and easy way!

So shiny, hardly a rock. More like lump of iron or some other metal.

easy to use, and very simple to adjust color into the rock (using greens, rich browns, blues, etc) for atmospheric purposes in a background. thank you!!

i'll deffinetly be looking at this again sometime, but could i use this same tactic, sort of, for making a stone path?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lizkay In reply to Kitsune-juusan [2010-03-02 20:28:31 +0000 UTC]

Surely
though for a path I would make the sides of each rock smaller, so that the rocks look more flat otherwise I don't see a problem

i came over this by accident and i just had to try it! never used gradient much before though and it was messing about so didnt quite follow the whole tutorial, used burns and dodges along with smudges and even added different colors with the brush, but the whole idea was so inspiring! thank you

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Lizkay In reply to c43l [2009-01-17 21:54:24 +0000 UTC]

The biggest advantage of gradients is the speed, as you don't need to paint all the different nuances and the really smooth quality of the whole thing in the end

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

c43l In reply to Lizkay [2009-01-18 00:01:38 +0000 UTC]

ive never been able to make it smooth with gradient, I'll learn sometime but dodge and burn suited better for me this time
