What do you think of when you look at this animal? Zebra? Donkey? Maybe giraffe?

The Okapi is possibly one of the most unusual creatures in the world, along with ones such as the ever-famous Platypus or the egg-laying Echidna. Discovered in the late 1800s to the early 1900s, this was one of those animals that people thought were a fraud, a hoax for publicity. In reality, this shy giraffe relative is a resident of parts of African rainforests in the Congo. They are antisocial and quiet, but prove to be a unique and interesting species overall.
Quite frankly, I really REALLY wanted to pet the one I saw at the Zoo the other day. XD

This is the second animal I referenced directly from life via St. Louis Zoo. (The best free Zoo in the world!) I scoured the zoo for hours for an animal that would stay suitably still and was close enough I didn't have to worry about him trotting away. Luckily, he was inside the Antelope House, allowing me to stand right next to him and sketch, sketch, sketch away! It took a bit of time, and hour or two maybe. Bored my dad out of his mind, but he got over it. And between such frightening combinations of radio music such as Lady Gaga and Queen (not saying they're horrible, but together it was just odd), and having me stare at him for several hours, I was afraid this poor Okapi was going to be warped for life.

I think I may make this a habit of mine, drawing one animal for every Zoo trip I make. It's very relaxing.
