Description I must be crazy… this is a 5” high sculpture of a ‘ship’s cat’ (get it?) that I’ve been working on recently, before it went for a spell in the oven. Don’t ask me where the idea came from… it’s a mixture to be sure, mostly inspired by the characters of the Men of War (Dream Squadron) forum and the various cat themed artworks that have been appearing around here (winks at Meezer and Tracy). Cats… you either love them or hate them and my sketchbooks seem to be bursting full of the curious felines.

*Erhem*, anyway, he’s a cute little guy wearing the uniform of an 18th century midshipman of the British Royal Navy (yes, I know, Navy this, Navy that... ) His eyes are plastic ‘alive eyes’ that shimmer and seem to follow you wherever you go in the room and he has six real whiskers, donated by one of my feather providing friend Jennifer’s cats (shed, not pulled!)

Wow he looks absolute freakin awesome. I really like his look. Allways was fascinated from those old uniforms and ships of that era.

question.. where's you get your eyes?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leopreston In reply to NatAsplund [2009-01-30 19:40:44 +0000 UTC]

They're from an Australian company called Beary Cheap. The eye type is known as 'Alive Eyes'. They have a website here: [link]

Nicely Done! I'd love to have one of this little guy for myself XP (not suggesting anything)

Where ever did you get those eyes for him? And I believe thats' Sculpey clay. Did you bake him with the eyes on or off?

I got the eyes from a site online called 'Beary Cheap'. They are called 'alive eyes' and I baked him with the eyes in. You just have to be careful to watch them is all!

I have sort of an odd technical question.
You're using super sculpey, right? Why don't the plastic eyes melt in the oven?

Leopreston In reply to Norsk-Skovkatt [2007-12-02 22:03:12 +0000 UTC]

Good question... *Dons a tophat and throws a smoke bomb on the floor, filling the air with spookery* It's magic!!!

Lol, no... they did melt a little, but strangely from the inside out (as they are still smoothly round on the outside). The trick is to turn the oven down and bake it for longer.

Ah, thank you!
Last time I bought those eyes, got a lot of melty-eyed nightmare creatures trying to figure them out.

Holy crap, this is glory in a Venti cup!
The overall feeling of him being like a liquidy bit of awesome pirate cat is grand.
Er.. he has such a wonderful fluid motion appearance to him.

Yeah, but cats usually have big eyes and the cute. . .even if they are plotters of evil.

what material do you use?

Leopreston In reply to mangalori [2007-10-15 18:27:12 +0000 UTC]

This is a polymer clay, called Super Sculpey. It's expensive but worth it I say!

So cute! I'm glad you explained the eyes cause when I first looked at the pic I was like "Did she reposition the eyes for each photograph??" haha. That is so cool! I wish I could have sculpted neat things like that, maybe one day in the future, hehe. ^-^

He heh, yeah, he has 'freaky follow me' eyes... and no worries, I'm sure you will! All you need is some clay and away you go. I believe anyone can sculpt, it just takes time...
