Description Another painted feather for inclusion in the Anthrocon art show, also of the mini variety.

My favourite one out of the lot, because it reminds me so much of my time out in Kenya. In fact, I drew a lot of inspiration from the wealth of material we had brought back with us. Ah, memories are so precious.

Btw, this painting depicts that most elusive of African animals, the leopard. This one is wearing dyed red clothing reminiscent of the Masai and beaded jewellery inspired by Zulu design. He (or she) is a nomad, walking the vast savanna. For those who don’t know, and are left wondering at the name, ‘Chui’ is the Swahili word for ‘leopard’ (‘aaah’ I hear you say). In all my time out there, I never once saw a leopard (or at least, I don’t recall seeing one), so this is dedicated to ‘the one that got away’.

This is painted on a Black Francolin wing feather backed with a cinnamon & cream cock hackle (and I’ve been inventive here too, curling the length of the feather around and re-attaching it at the base. Gives it a nice furry feel that reminds me of Zulu warrior garb). The shaft has been wrapped in red thread with a trail of five wooden beads. Also presented in the mount going to the con.

It may be only a coincidence, but the title sound like "Je suis nomade" in french (I am nomad) or "chu nomade" in good Quebecer. I've always love that kind of painting; I like the way how you combine two feather to make a more finished work. It's really great!

Dear gods, this is amazing. The artwork itself is beautiful (I love the vibrancy of the colours) and this is the first time I've seen painting on feathers, of all things. Fantastic work.

It's either superb skills or the right tools used right (a super tiny brush ) that makes the spots so outstanding. Spotty!

I'm debating on whether or not this one is my favorite of the bunch. The inclusion of a lovely background, vivid coloring, and the deviation from your usual canine variety of subjects makes this a bit more unique in my eyes. Plus, I just have this soft spot for... well... spots!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leopreston In reply to Lupinator [2007-05-03 18:42:10 +0000 UTC]

Lol! Yes, I have to admit that sometimes I get sick and tired of painting canine subjects. Usually I switch to people though (although not on the feathers). A leopard was a welcome change and I also had fun adding in all the African-ish detail. Spots!

Lupinator In reply to Leopreston [2007-05-03 18:53:55 +0000 UTC]

Well, I'm not trying to bash ya for drawing so many lovely canines... and I sure as heck have a lot more variety of subjects in your artwork than pretty much any other artist's gallery here on DA.

Plus, I don't really care because I luff canines too...

It really is incredible what you can do with feathers- I don't think I've seen anyone else achieve anything similar, but then again, I've never looked.

Lol, After a while of searching you'll begin to see that certain artists are known for certain things. Go check out Sandra San Tara (who is known for her large turkey feathers), Kimberly Le Crone, Heather Schumacher, Julie Thompson (is known for her peacock feathers), Jennifer Miller and Rashida Mustafa (LenzaMoon). All these artists I admire greatly, and they are the major players online. I should note that they're all mainly based in America, which has always made me feel kinda secluded, but eh, there you go.

Beautiful work on the painted feathers. I wonder, what do you use to paint on and how durable is it? It really looks great , congrats!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Leopreston In reply to Gekster [2007-05-03 18:35:14 +0000 UTC]

Well, I usually use acrylic paint, as it's somewhat flexible, but you can also use oils and possibly gouache to paint on feathers too. I've seen a lot of feather paintings done in oils, the only down side being that it takes a while to dry.

Gekster In reply to Leopreston [2007-05-03 18:42:11 +0000 UTC]

Aha, well I think I have some acrylic paint left from the work on the mask XD so maybe if I decide to try something like that, that would be tried the first. *grin* Oh btw, is it just me having trouble accessing the forum, or is the site down?

Thank you muchly for the helpful info!
