Description My entry for the ArtOrder challenge 'Dungeon Delve'.

Here's the details for the challenge:

Illustration size/format:
3.875” wide x 8.75” height

Description:
An adventurer in a dark dungeon, thrusting lantern ahead into darkness. Character can be just about any race, class, and gender, as long as he or she looks in bad shape--cut, bruised, dirty, hair all stringy and damp from moisture dripping off walls and ceiling. This character is lost in the dungeon and doesn¹t even know whether there is a way out, much less where it would be.

I'm looking for a piece that captures the concept of being lost in dangerous territory - "behind enemy lines" type of vibe. I will not provide direction on the dungeon. The adventurer could be in a long dark hallway, or a vast dwarven hall under the mountains. The environment should be chosen to support the concept of the illustration.

Thanks mate!

I do have a FB page for my art, but it has less work than here or my website and I'm not very good at keeping it up to date: [link]

Very nice, I love the threat that is in-obvious to the character.

So.. it's very cool. I love the angle, I love the whole area he's in - I could easily see getting lost in a place like that.

The character perspective seems off a bit, like he's leaning too far forward to the camera. I know he's leaning forward, but seems we should be seeing more of the underside of his chin. The lines of his belt, knee-guard, etc., make it seem like we're looking at him horizontally. The lantern particularly. (By way of contrast, imagine drawing a circle on the underside of the walkway he's standing on, and compare its shape with the underside of the lantern.)

The spider's fantastic! The only weak points are that the abdomen looks flat (like a coin), because of the way the markings have been applied. Also I think the shadows would streak off to the right, since the red light is off to the left. The freshly wrapped-up victim in the bottom is great, I love the hand!

The lighting in the upper third of the picture seems too milky, as if the air were filled with blue gas. The uppermost bridges would be silhouetted against that luminous sky, surely.

For the lantern lighting, consider the angle between the incident light and the surface - the archway would be light well, but the vertical wall it's set in would be dark by comparison. Also consider the falloff of the lantern light. The archway is actually quite a distance behind the character, so I think the nearby pillar ("Salvation") would be more brightly lit in comparison. (The effect is now is as if the lantern were projecting a spotlight away from the viewer.)

Anyways, very cool, those are the nitpicks!

Thanks for the feedback Michael, I'm glad you like the image. Many of the issues you pointed out are correct and have also been spotted by others. I plan to try and fix up the lantern light in the background archway, which should help a bit with the depth and perspective.

Thanks, nitpicks appreciated
